Christ, she was beautiful. I still wanted her. Craved her. Especially now that I had seen her again. She is married, Broxton! Yes, but I knew better than anyone from watching my parents that not all marriages were good ones. I would never, ever get in the middle of a happy marriage, but what if…

Fuck it. I had to know for sure, so I took a chance.

“Blaire, are you happy?” I saw her eyes widen and her mouth drop open before she quickly turned her back on me and took a few steps away. In that moment of hesitation, I knew something wasn’t quite right. Before I could press the issue, Evan—the husband—came out into the hallway and spotted her.

“Oh, there you are, Blaire.” He spared me a cursory glance before looking back at his wife. “Jenna just called, and—”

But Blaire cut him off. “Okay, we can get going now.” She turned back to me with a sad smile. “Bye, Axel. It was nice to catch up with you again.” Evan put his hand on the small of her back, and I again had the urge to forcibly remove any part of his body that touched her.

As I watched them walk away, I realized she had never answered my question about whether or not she was happy. I wondered who the hell Jenna was and why Blaire stopped Evan from finishing his sentence.

Something was going on with Blaire, and I was going to find out exactly what the hell it was.

As we walked down to the car, Evan relayed what Jenna had told him. He pulled the Benz out onto a surface street and asked casually, “So what was that in the hallway with you and Broxton?”

“What do you mean?”

“I’m not an idiot, sweetheart. I could see the way he looked at you.” He paused for a long moment before asking, “You were more than friends in college, weren’t you?”

I laid my head back against the headrest and closed my eyes. “Yes,” I sighed. I could still feel the effects on my body from Axel’s proximity—a tightness in my nipples and a pulsing between my thighs—and it aggravated me that he had that kind of power over me, even after everything that had happened.

Evan was silent for a few minutes, and I thought he was going to let it drop. I felt the car stop and opened my eyes to see that we were at a stop light. Evan’s gaze was heavy on the side of my face. “Is he Carrie’s father?”

I drew a deep breath into my lungs and turned to look at my husband. “Yes, he is.”
