“Why would she need an apartment that big if you’re not planning to move in and fill all those rooms with more children?” She had finally raised her head and looked at me with accusing, bloodshot eyes.

“No, Bear. That’s not why I did that. Milan was… well, she got upset when she realized I planned to rent her a two bedroom. She said it wasn’t fair that I bought you and Carrie a bigger apartment than her and Junior.” Okay, that sounded really stupid when I said it out loud. “I was just trying to make things even, you know?” I finished lamely.

Blaire pushed herself to her feet and glared down at me through her tears. “Do you have any fucking idea how ridiculous that sounds?” Yes, I did. Now. She stomped out of the shower, and I clambered to my feet and followed her as she roughly dried herself with a towel. “First of all, you did not buy me and Carrie an apartment. It was your apartment, and you invited us to move in. I didn’t demand it. You asked me.”

She threw her towel on the floor and stormed into the bedroom. She was still crying, but she was as mad as a hornet now. “And everything has to be fair and even? So that means I’m on the same level as your fuck buddy? Are you supposed to keep a log of every time we fuck now so that Milan can get equal treatment?” I tried to break in and answer her, but she was on a roll.

“And would you consider yourself her boyfriend, her husband, or her sugar daddy? And why the fuck are you paying for her apartment anyway?” She pulled on a shirt and whirled around to face me with her hands on her hips, that sexy red hair flying around her like devil flames that had taken on a life of their own. “Answer me, dammit!”

“Shit, Blaire. I’ve been trying to answer, but you wouldn’t shut up.” Now I was as pissed as she was. “Look, Milan started crying and saying I was treating her baby as a second-class citizen. I felt guilty as hell, so I agreed to get her the bigger apartment. And yes, I do feel a bit like an idiot now that I think about it. She was just very…”

“Manipulative?”

“I don’t know. But I can’t believe you’re saying you’re on the same level as an old fuck buddy. I’ve told you I love you, Blaire.”
