“Not in the Jesus, Hallelujah, sense. I’m not really sure what she meant by it, but she thinks she’s perfect and she won’t stop until she gets her. She’s strong, Dax. We need to get her back to Hell fast.”

“How did she take you, anyway?”

“She held the dark object to my throat,” he says.

“How did you get to Adelaide’s?” I ask him, hoping he still has enough strength to answer.

“I found it in the room. I couldn’t hardly think straight enough to portal. But with the address there in front of me, I was able to focus.”

He dozes off and I look between them.

“You got this covered?”

“Yes, but I will need to check on Stevie later.” I nod my head and look at the way she looks at Asmo. Something sinks in my gut, making me realize that it’s the way I look at Blair. “Blair is probably going to be upset when you get there,” Kas says.

“Why?”

“Probably best to hear it from her.”

Chapter 26

Again, I find Blair in her bed, sleeping in her clothes. Fortunately, not the same clothes I left her the other night. Her hair fans her face against the pillow as she breathes heavily. She’s curled up on her side, no blanket on top of her. A tight black shirt clings to her chest and she’s wearing a black skirt.

I love looking at her like this. Her face relaxed and her mouth pouty. Nothing bothers her when she’s like this. She’s peaceful and pliable. While sleep takes her, no one is after her or disappointing her. Blair deserves everything and I’m here to make sure she gets it, that I give her the best and the darkest parts of me to her, knowing full well she wants them both.

I’ve seen the gleam in her eye when I talk about things I want, and how she admires my violence. We were made for each other and there’s no way in Heaven or Hell that I’m going to let her go.

As I push her hair off of her neck, I notice a few splotches of blood. It looks like she may have been scratched. Anger and fear rip through my chest and I take my shirt off while panting heavily.

She’s mine.

Fucking mine. And someone hurt her, touched her. I wasn’t there. I was too fucking busy finding Asmo, torturing a demon, and finding dark objects. Is this what our life would look like, me constantly away, not able to be there for her while I do Lucifer’s dirty work? There’s no getting away from what I am and who I work for. But for the second time in my life, I wish I could be something else, something better.
