“Oh,” Noah said, before taking a gulp of coffee. Just as he managed to swallow it, Evelyn’s words sunk in, and when they did, Noah scrambled to stop from dropping his mug. “What!”

“You heard.”

“But I thought it hadn’t been opened in years.”

Evelyn grimaced. “It hasn’t.”

“Eww,” Noah said, faking a shiver. “Please tell me it’s not all covered in cobwebs. I don’t do spiders, Evie. I scream like a girl if I see one.”

“Well, I did see a few strands here and there, but you won’t have to worry about that. You’ll be busy elsewhere.”

“Doing what?”

“Be right back,” Evelyn said as she hopped off her stool. Leaving the room, she returned seconds later carrying a clipboard. “Do you have your company card with you today?” she asked as she sat back down.

“Never leave home without it,” Noah said, smiling. “Why?”

“Because I need to get everyone working on the wing, and then arrange for a plumber, a heating technician, cleaners, and someone to fix the lift, so there’s no way I can leave the house today.”

“Okay, so what do you want me to do?”

“I need you to go shopping?”

“For what?”

Evelyn tore off a sheet of paper filled with notes and slid it to Noah. “Mattresses, box springs, towels, linens, and anything else you think might help brighten up the wing.”

Reading down the list, Noah said, “Evelyn, this is a massive list. What the fuck? Six beds!”

“Yes, six. The frames all seem sound, but nothing up there was ever covered, so everything else has to go. Oh, and we’ll need pillows, too. Just get an assortment, and they can choose the ones they like. Do the same thing with the mattresses, and we can always swap them around if we need to.”

“What about colors and patterns?”

Glancing at her watch, she said, “We have some time before everyone else gets here. Let’s go up, and I’ll show you the rooms. Most are wallpapered, and since we don’t have time to replace the drapes, you’ll just have to try to stay as neutral as possible. Oh, and it all has to be delivered today.”

Noah looked at the list and then to Evelyn and then to the list again. “That isn’t going to be easy, Evie.”

“You have carte blanche, Noah. Whatever it takes, no matter how much it costs, just get it done. I’m depending on you, and I know you can do this.”

“Why me? Why not one of the women?”

“Because they aren’t entrusted with corporate cards and yesterday, Sally had on two different shoes.”

Giggling, Noah said, “I was wondering if you had noticed that.”

“Yes, but luckily she was gone before Addison got home.”

Noah read down the list again. “This is a shit load of stuff, Evie.”

“Yes, I know. Are you up for it?”
