By the smirk slowly making its way across Addison’s face, Fran knew she had made her point. Getting up, Fran strolled to the door. “Oh, there’s one more thing,” she said, turning back around.

“What’s that?”

“I know how you hate attention, but if this is to work, attention is what we need.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

Fran smiled. “You have nine figures in your bank account. Make sure Easterbrook knows it.”

Chapter Twenty-Two

Joanna saw the door to the study cracked open, and deliberating for a moment, she tapped on the wood and walked inside.

Addison looked up. “Yes?”

“I just wanted to thank you for the mobile. It was delivered this afternoon,” Joanna said. “I’m not sure why—”

“Fran will be texting you tomorrow to set up a time when you and she can go shopping, and that can’t be done if you don’t have a mobile.”

“Shopping?”

“Yes,” Addison said. “There’s a party we’ll be attending on the tenth of December, and I doubt whatever you have in your wardrobe will be appropriate. Since you and she have apparently become bosom buddies, I’ve assigned her the task of you not embarrassing me.”

“We? As in you and I?”

“Do I need to use smaller words?”

“No,” Joanna said, mentally counting to ten before continuing. “I’m just trying to figure out why suddenly you’d want to be seen in public with me. That’s all.”

“It’s for business purposes only. I assure you.”

“Business?”

Addison pinched the bridge of her nose and shook her head ever so slightly. “Yes, business, but the details don’t involve you. All you have to do is show up, and keep your mouth shut.”

Joanna stiffened, and arching an eyebrow, she stared at Addison. “Do you treat all the women you ask out on a date like this?”

“This is not a date!” Addison said, getting to her feet.

“Well, it’s definitely not if you’re going to ask like this,” Joanna said, and turning on her heel, she marched from the room.

“Shit,” Addison said as she hung her head. After letting out an exaggerated sigh, she hurried to catch up to Joanna. By the time she reached the foyer, Joanna was already at the top of the stairs.

“Joanna,” Addison called out.

Stopping mid-stride, Joanna turned around. “What?”

Addison slowly climbed the stairs until she reached Joanna. She had no idea what to say, and it was crystal clear when she tried to speak. “Look...I just need...can’t you just—”

“Apologize.”

“What?”
