Having been staring into his coffee cup, Noah raised his eyes. “Let me guess. She's decided she wants scrambled eggs instead? Or better yet,” he said, placing his hand on his chest. “Be still my heart, tell me she wants Eggs Benedict, and I’ll marry you.”
“Since when have you been interested in women?”
“I’m not, but I’m desperate here,” he said, leaning forward on his stool. “Come on, Evie, tell me she’s changing the menu, and I’ll make an honest woman out of you.”
“I’m as honest as I want to be, thank you very much,” Evelyn said, taking a sip of her coffee. “But this does have something to do with marriage.”
Noah squinted. “Okay, I give. What’s this all about?”
“It seems Addison is getting married.”
In the middle of taking a sip of coffee, Noah’s lips stayed pressed against the porcelain as he slowly raised his eyes to meet Evelyn’s. He could tell in an instant that she wasn’t joking. Slowly placing his cup on the counter, he said, “One more time.”
“Addison is getting married.”
“Addison is getting married?”
“That’s right.”
“Addison Kane, wealthy businesswoman and a bitch for all seasons, is getting married?”
“Yes.”
Noah stared back at Evelyn for almost a minute until his thoughts finally found their way from his mind to his mouth. “Tell me you’re shitting me.”
“No, I’m afraid I’m not,” Evelyn said, her amusement at the man’s colorful vocabulary showing on her face. “That’s why I asked everyone to get to work early today. We have a lot of things to do, and I need your help if we’re going to get everything done in time.”
Noah got to his feet, and after topping off his coffee cup again, he turned to Evelyn. “You’re serious, aren’t you?”
“Yes, I am.”
“Well, I’ll be damned. The abominable snow queen has fallen in love,” he said, returning to his seat.
“Unfortunately, that couldn’t be further from the truth.”
“What do you mean?”
“This is about the will, Noah.”
Noah’s mouth dropped open. Having worked for Addison for almost four years, through no fault of his own, he had overheard enough arguments between his employer and her lawyer to know what Evelyn was saying.
“Shit!” he said. “So, she either does this or—”
“Loses the company.”
“The bastard! What kind of fucked-up father does this to his own daughter?”
“Well, if you had ever met Oliver, you wouldn’t be asking that question, but we can’t concern ourselves with that anymore. We have more important things to talk about.”
“Such as?”
“Such as the fact that tomorrow afternoon Addison will be visiting the registry office, and then her fiancée and the woman’s father will be moving into the east wing.”
