“In your dreams, Fran,” Addison said, getting to her feet. “I have more important things to do than listen while my name is being given away.” Stomping to the door, she yanked it open and stormed out.

Fran rolled her eyes as she picked up the phone and dialed an extension, but when it rang busy, she got up and headed back to the Addison’s office. Acknowledging the other secretaries with a quick grin, she approached Millie’s desk just as the woman hung up her phone.

“Well, I know she went to see you, and she was not at all happy when she returned, but by that smile you’re wearing, should I assume things went well?” Millie said, keeping her voice low so the junior secretaries couldn’t hear her.

“That all depends on your definition of well,” Fran said, letting out a laugh. “Could you do me a favor and see if she has any time open in the next few days so we can set up a meeting with Joanna.”

“Hmm, let me see,” Millie said as she brought up Addison’s calendar on her computer. “Yes, actually, she’s free after three tomorrow, or is that too early?”

“No, that’s perfect, but do us both a favor and don’t tell Addison until tomorrow morning. The less time she has to stew about it, the better it will be for all of us.”

Chapter Five

Addison exited the building with Millie by her side and Fran following closely behind. She slipped on her sunglasses and then looked up and down the street.

“Where’s George?”

“I sent him home,” Fran said. “We’re taking my car.”

“Why?”

“Because a limousine on the streets of Burnt Oak will definitely turn some heads, and I’m fairly certain you don’t want to do that,” Fran said, aiming her remote at the Mercedes parked by the curb.

“And you don’t think anyone will notice this classy sedan,” Addison said, opening the passenger door.

“At least it doesn’t take up two parking spaces,” Fran said. “Now get in the car Addison, or we’re going to be late. Millie, I hope you don’t mind the back seat.”

If it had been up to Millie, she would have preferred to stay in the office. Having worked for Addison long enough to know all about her moods, Millie had noticed that since Addison had found out about the meeting with Joanna Sheppard that morning, she had gone quiet. That was not a good sign. Addison was holding back, letting her temper fester and grow, and when it was finally unleashed, Millie preferred not to be anywhere near ground zero. Unfortunately, being the administrative assistant to a woman who didn’t even carry a pen, when Addison had a meeting, Millie had a meeting.

“Not at all, Fran,” Millie said, hastily climbing into the back of the automobile.
