Waiting until David lowered the doors of the 1983 Countach 5000S, Joanna meandered around the next two cars in line. David explained the highlights of both the cherry red 1988 Ferrari 328 GTS and the royal blue 1994 Porsche Turbo Cabriolet, but when he began to talk about the last, a two-toned, blue and white 2004 Morgan Aero Roadster, Joanna quickly interrupted.
“What do you mean it’s made out of wood?”
“Not the entire car,” David said with a laugh. “Just the framework for the aluminum body.”
“Seriously?”
“Yes. It’s part of what makes Morgan – Morgan.”
“Well, color me surprised,” Joanna said, admiring the car. “So, tell me, which is her favorite?”
“Who?”
Joanna turned around. “Addison, of course.”
“Oh, Miss Kane—” David stopped and grimaced. “I mean, Mrs. Kane, doesn’t drive any of the cars.”
“Why not?”
“She doesn’t know how.”
“What?” Joanna blurted. “Why have so many cars if you don’t know how to drive?”
“Well, it was her father’s collection, and they do increase in value every year. I guess she just keeps them as an investment.”
“I suppose,” Joanna said, running her hand lightly over the front fender of the Morgan. Tilting her head to the side, Joanna shifted her focus to the line of cars to her right. “David?”
“Yes, miss.”
“Where do you keep the keys for these?”
Chapter Eighteen
Intent on the task at hand, Kenneth Richards didn’t look up from his computer until the person who had entered the office was standing in front of his desk. Raising his eyes, he knew in an instant she didn’t work for the company. Attire at Kane Holdings was professional at all times. Suit and ties were worn by the men, and women dressed to the same high standards; however, the woman in front of Kenneth wasn’t dressed to any standard he had ever come across.
“Can I help you?”
“Yes, I’d like to see Francesca Neary please.”
Kenneth swiveled to his keyboard and tapped away at the keys. “I’m sorry,” he said, crossing his arms as he spun back around. “I don’t seem to find any appointments at this time. Do you have one?”
“No, but if she isn’t too busy, I’d really like to see her.”
“That’s not possible,” he said, pointing at the door the woman had just come through. “Without an appointment, you don’t get past this desk, so please leave.”
Joanna was a very resourceful woman. She had to be to keep her father and herself afloat for so many years, so after traveling the distance to reach Kane Holdings, she wasn’t about to be turned away.
