The next room she visited was directly across the hallway. Like the first, everything inside was covered in dust and cobwebs, but unlike the first, the only furnishings present was a single bed pushed up against a wall. Noticing a door next to the bed, Evelyn stared at it for a moment. To the best of her knowledge, there were only two full baths and two half baths in the wing, and other than in the master suites of homes as old as The Oaks, closets were rare. Intrigued, she opened the door and found herself standing at the far end of the massive walk-in closet in Addison’s room. Looking from the wardrobe to the bed and back again, Evelyn solved the puzzle. It had been a child’s room, and with the connecting door leading to the master suite, she believed at some point it must have been a nursery as well. Although she was sure none of their guests would be sleeping on the small bed, Evelyn, nonetheless, went about taking all the appropriate measurements. She had been given the task of cleaning the wing, and by God, the entire wing would be cleaned.

Realizing the east wing mirrored the west, other than measuring for mattresses in the remaining four bedrooms, there were no surprises to be found. The two bedrooms on each side at the end of the long hallway were adjoined to the next two through connecting doors, enabling the occupants to share the enormous bathroom at the very end of the corridor. With three doors leading into it, guests and family could enter via the hall or either bedroom into the communal en suite. Although in dire need of a good cleaning, as Evelyn inspected the fixtures and tiles, she decided, it could serve the purpose for which it was built. Noticing that the middle bedrooms had only small radiators, and the last two contained fireplaces as well as cast iron convectors, Evelyn decided the father would be more than comfortable in the one closest to the bathroom, while the nursing staff could wear sweaters in the winter if need be.

Now satisfied she had enough information, Evelyn turned off the lights and left the wing, leaving the doors opened to allow some fresh air to enter. As she descended the stairs, she heard the thumping bass of upbeat music coming from the kitchen, and with a smile on her face, Evelyn headed in that direction.
