Evelyn saw Addison begin to sway a half-second before Joanna did, and rushing to her side, she wrapped an arm around her waist. “I think you need to sit down.”
Addison stared blankly at Evelyn. “We...we have twins.”
“Yes, I know,” Evelyn said, her eyes creasing at the corners. “But you’re not going to be able to enjoy them if you faint in the middle of the foyer.”
“I’m...I’m not going to faint,” Addison said as she stepped away from Evelyn. “I’m just...I’m just shocked.”
“So was Joanna when she found out,” Fran said, snickering. “I squealed, and she went pale.”
“Wait...what?” Addison said, looking at Fran.
“While you were...um...away, I stood in for you.”
“You did?”
When she saw Fran nod, Addison bowed her head, paused, and then raised her eyes. “Thank you.”
“You’re quite welcome, and I’d like to say I’d do it again, but...” Fran stopped and eyed Joanna. “Hell, I’d do it again in a heartbeat, but I don’t think there’ll be a need. Do you?”
“None whatsoever,” Addison said as she gazed at Joanna. “If we have more children, I’ll be there for them from start to finish. I promise.”
Joanna smiled, and taking a few steps, she placed the carrier on the table in the center of the foyer. “Well, before we discuss having any more, would you like to meet your son?”
“Very much,” Addison said, moving to stand by Joanna’s side.
Addison held her breath as Joanna moved aside the blue blanket and when her son came into view, wearing the tiniest of blue stocking caps, Addison’s eyes filled with tears. “Oh my God,” she said in a breath. “He’s...he’s beautiful, but...but he’s so small. Smaller than Sheridan.”
“That he is. It's why he couldn’t come home until today. He had a few issues—”
“Issues?” Addison blurted.
“His lungs were congested, but he’s fine now. He was given a clean bill of health earlier today.”
Addison looked at her son again, marveling at his angelic face and the dark brown threads of hair escaping his cap. “And his name?”
“Well, I hope you don’t mind, but I named him Robert Sheppard Kane. Once it came into my head, nothing else seemed to fit.”
Addison’s skin prickled as goosebumps sprouted on her skin, and fighting to restrain the tears threatening to escape, she looked at Joanna. “No, I don’t mind at all. It’s a good name, and it’s an honest name, and I’ll make sure he does it proud.”
“You will, will you?”
The corners of Addison’s mouth arched upward. “We will.”
