“That’s not for me to say,” Evelyn said, keeping her grin to a minimum.
“And why did she rent a bloody limo? It’s almost as if she was planning to...well, to run away.”
Evelyn rolled her eyes. “She’s not planning to do what you did, and she rented the limo because nothing in your garage is equipped with seat belts. Something that’s necessary when you have an infant carrier.”
“Oh,” Addison said, and staring at the floor, she began to ramble. “But she said she’d be back in an hour, and she’s not here. Maybe she’s not coming back. Maybe she...maybe she lied just so...just so she could get away from me.”
Evelyn felt her mobile vibrating in her pocket again, and hiding her excitement at the message she knew it contained, she crept toward the front door, thankful Addison wasn’t paying attention.
Unable to rid herself of the insecurities whirling around in her head, Addison furrowed her brow. There were still so many things she needed to say to Joanna, but because of some errand, Addison was put on the back burner. It wasn’t a good feeling, yet how many times had she done the same thing to Joanna? Working too late, traveling the continent...running away.
Addison drew in a long breath, and pushing her anxieties aside, she raised her eyes to continue her conversation with Evelyn. Discovering Evelyn was no longer standing next to her, Addison flinched back her head, and as she quickly looked around, she saw Joanna standing just inside the front door with a baby carrier in her hand.
“Joanna,” Addison said, jumping to her feet. “I didn’t hear you come in.”
“I know. We planned it that way,” Joanna said, stepping aside to allow Fran to enter.
Having not seen Fran since the board meeting, Addison smiled at her friend, but as she rounded the table to greet them both, Addison came to a stuttered stop when she noticed Fran was holding an identical carrier. “Fran, you...you had a baby?”
Fran pressed her lips together for a moment, and casting a quick wink in Joanna’s direction, she said, “It wasn’t me.”
Addison’s eyes darted back and forth between Joanna and Fran as she tried to find a clue to the amusement showing on both of their faces, but coming up empty, she honed in on the two carriers the women were holding. Both were black, and both had gray trim, but while one had a blanket of pink...the other had a blanket of blue.
Addison’s mouth dropped open, and stumbling back a half-step, she fixed her eyes on Joanna. “You...you had twins?”
Joanna beamed. “Yes, we did.”
“You...we...we have twins?” Addison said, taking another half-step backward.
