  49. An Invitation from the Publisher

“I sent him packing the next morning. Didn’t speak to him again till a couple of weeks ago when I told him I was pregnant.” We’re almost at my house and I’m looking forward to collapsing on the couch. I’m so tired, it’s hard to keep my heavy head upright. “Pete was supposed to be helping out tomorrow. My friends have arranged to come over and paint the spare room and set things up for the new arrival because I’ve been living in denial for so long, I haven’t done anything to get ready. But now he’s pulling out owing to work commitments. Something he used to do on a regular basis.”

Scott stops outside my house and turns off the ignition. He swivels to face me.

“No offence, Trish, but he sounds like a complete twat.”

I smile and shake my head. “You’re not the only one to have called him that, either.”

“I’ve got a free weekend. Can I help?”

“No, that’s fine, it’s”

“Please, I’d like to. Plus, I’d get to meet these friends of yours, who sound like excellent types.”

“Scott, I’m not sure”

“I could see your garden, too.”

“It’s a really nice offer…”

I pause and decide not to follow up with a “but”. If he wants to come over tomorrow, why stop him? He’d be good company and the girls could interrogate him, which would be fun. Plus, I could show off my garden. And I’ll admit, the thought of spending more time with him is tempting.

“Thanks,” I say, opening my door.

“Is 9 a.m. OK?”

“Perfect.” I climb out of the car then lean back in. “Thanks for the dumplings. They were excellent.”

“You’re very welcome. Thanks again for coming to the wedding with me.”

He doesn’t mention the drunken kiss, but I know we’re both thinking about it.

Scott starts the car. “See you tomorrow, Trish, and get some rest.”

I wave as he pulls away. Then I stagger into the house, kick off my shoes and collapse.

“I’ll get it!” Lily yells, even though she’s standing right next to me.

They arrived en masse at eight thirty this morning, painting gear on, Mags and Lily complaining about how early it was, and Emma announcing she’d already walked the dog, eaten breakfast with Freddie, made a tray of biscuits and played four rounds of snap. All that on top of the fact she’s about to pop out baby number two. Emma’s been watching us with disapproval as we devoured the box of doughnuts Mags picked up on the way here.
