I look up and glare at Scott’s gorgeous dark brown eyes. “Please don’t try to tell me what a good person I am. That I’ll find someone who”

Scott grabs my hand. “I don’t want you to find someone else,” he says. “I’m trying to tell you I’ve been crazy about you since the moment I stuck that pin in your hair.”

“But you’ve been acting like… Yesterday when I kissed you…” I break off, my heart thumping.

Scott sighs. “I was giving you space, Trish. You have a newborn baby, you’re trying to form a new relationship with your mum and you’ve been dealing with your mental health. I thought… It would have been so selfish of me if I’d tried to make a move, even though you’re all I think about.”

“Does that mean you’re… that there’s a chance?”

“Oh, God, I hope so, Trish.”

Tears fill my eyes. “Are you sure you want to get involved with someone who never used to cry and now seems to burst into tears for no reason at all?”

Scott slides a hand around my waist. “If that someone is you, then yes.”

As we lean towards each other, I inhale a subtle whiff of lavender. There’s a glowing sensation deep in my chest, warm and bright like the sun. I wonder if it’s emanating out of me like a golden aura.

“Could I please kiss you now?” asks Scott, his mouth inches from mine.

I press my lips to his in reply.

I started writing this novel at the beginning of 2020 – talk about a bumpy year! Like everyone, I could not have predicted the extraordinary times to follow.

Since then I’ve had many ups and downs as I’ve tried to care for family, manage a business, and find space in my head to write.

My heart-felt thank you to my three children, Grace, Sophie and George, and my husband, Mike. We have spent a lot of time together during the various lockdowns of the past two years here in New Zealand and I couldn’t have asked for better company. Your support for my writing has been the one constant I could rely on in these unpredictable times.

To all my precious family and friends, thank you, thank you, thank you, for your love and kindness (and for buying my books and reading them even when I know they’re not the type of book you would normally consider!).

Thank you to Hannah Todd for reading the first draft of this novel and providing insightful advice and feedback. Your enthusiasm for my writing has been tremendously encouraging, especially when I’ve been afflicted with self-doubt.
