I wish there wasn’t a great big lock of his hair hanging over his attractive drunken face screaming at me to reach up and brush it back.

“Please can I walk to the hotel with you? I’ll try really hard to keep my mouth shut and to keep my distance.”

He flicks his head and the lock of hair swings away then flops back down. He smells like a slightly sweaty, drunken male and it should be off-putting, but it’s having the opposite effect. I want to throw myself at him. Instead, I shrug.

“If you want.”

Scott nods rapidly. “I do want.”

We walk silently down the rest of the path and burst out onto a busy, bright street pulsating with flashing lights and noise.

Scott shields his eyes. “You know, this is one of the things I love about Tokyo – the way you can be in some tiny lane where the locals are quietly going about their lives, then you turn the corner and you’re back in the mayhem.”

“It’s incredible,” I say.

“Yeah, only I’m not such a fan right now.”

I pause to put my shoes back on, laughing at Scott’s pained expression. We cross the road and head down the street to our hotel.

“How’s the head?” I ask, smiling.

“More like how’s my stomach. I’m trying extremely hard not to throw up in front of the most beautiful girl in the world, but it is proving to be a battle.”

Sure, he’s drunk and probably doesn’t mean what he says about me being beautiful, but it’s nice to hear. I suspect that makes me a sad, pathetic sap.

We reach the hotel and head across the foyer. Scott puts a hand on the wall beside the lift to steady himself while we wait.

“Trish, that was the most generous thing anyone has ever done for me.”

“What was?”

“You, coming with me to the wedding. I’ll never forget it.”

“It’s no big deal, Scott. Anyway, I enjoyed it.”

“Yeah, me too.”

He turns away, but not before I’ve seen that look back in his eyes. I shouldn’t be pleased he’s attracted to me, but I am. Best to move on swiftly.

“I saw you talking to Harumi at one point. How did that go?”

Scott stares intently at his shoes and I think he’s not going to answer.

“She wanted to know about you,” he said at last.

“Me?”

“She was annoyed I’d brought a date.”

“That’s ridiculous.”

Scott looks up. “I didn’t want you there to make her jealous, Trish. I hope you know that.”

“It doesn’t matter if you did.”
