I think of the trackpants I reluctantly removed when I had to get ready. I’d never considered it till now, but dressing up has lost its lustre. For years it’s been vital for me to look smart and well groomed – not just for the sake of my job, but so that people would glance at me and go “Wow! She must be successful.” I hate leaving the house without make-up and I never miss my weekly hair appointment. But since I fell pregnant, there’s been several occasions – OK, only two so far – when I’ve dashed down the road for milk or bread and all I’ve done is put my hair in a rough ponytail. No make-up. No changing into something smart yet casual. The first time I did it, I felt like I was walking down the street topless. Surely everyone was going to stare at me in horror. But no one did. No one noticed me at all.
Scott holds something out.
“I wasn’t sure how to say thanks or what I was supposed to do in these circumstances.”
It’s a clear box containing a tiny spray of exquisite ivory-white flowers attached to a hairpin. I lift the pin out and inhale a scent similar to jasmine, only muskier.
“They’re real,” I whisper.
“You don’t have to wear it,” Scott says quietly.
“I’d love to. It’s very thoughtful.” I’m pretty sure it’s the most thoughtful thing a guy has ever done for me. Ever. “Can you…?” Turning, I hold the pin at the top edge of my bun. “About here.”
Scott attaches the pin carefully and my scalp prickles at his touch.
“Right,” he says as I turn to face him. “Ready?”
Our eyes meet and I feel as if Scott is no longer a stranger. There’s a connection between us that I can’t describe.
“As I’ll ever be,” I say, my heart beating faster.
“I’d suggest a stiff drink beforehand, but…” He raises his eyebrows. “Baby wouldn’t approve.”
Once again, it hits me. For all of ten minutes, I’d forgotten I was pregnant.
“Sadly, I’m unable to partake. But we could always stop at the bar if you need some liquid courage.”
Scott frowns and shakes his head. “Only a dickhead would do that, Trish. Besides, I’m feeling pretty good about it all right now. You must have a calming effect on me.”
I laugh. “Usually, I have the opposite effect. My friends are always telling me I can’t relax. Lily says being beside me is like standing next to a gagged and bound gorilla itching to break free and attack.”
We enter the lift and Scott presses the button for the ground floor.
“This Lily sounds interesting.”
