‘Exactly! I was doing just that because everyone must have a reason for wanting to take on this challenge, and I suddenly thought, I wonder what they make of us,’ Vicky says, taking a giant bite of pizza.
‘They probably just think we’re a bunch of mates,’ I say, rolling my eyes at them.
Zaza giggles into her drink before reaching for her phone after it pings.
‘Is Liam still up? That’s love right there. I forgot about the time difference and called Nick earlier. Accidentally woke him up so told him to just go back to sleep,’ Vicky says with a grimace, causing Zaza to look sheepish. ‘Oh shit, I forgot to get our altitude tablets!’ she gasps, her hands covering her face in despair.
‘I thought you added them to your big Amazon shop,’ Zaza says, her focus shifting to her phone.
‘No, that was the electrolytes that were mentioned on that travel blog, remember?’ she says, referring to what’s become her hobby over the last few months – looking up Peru in the location setting on Instagram and making a note of what every tourist has said they’ve found useful. ‘You said you’d go get them and I said not to bother because I had to go to the pharmacy with Chloe for more Calpol anyway. I just forgot.’
‘Don’t sweat it,’ I shrug.
‘Sorry, guys,’ she says with a frown, her frustration visible.
‘We’ll get them here,’ Zaza says into her phone.
‘Pharmacy will be shut by now,’ I say, looking at my watch to see it’s nine o’clock already and that we’ve managed to sit in this spot for hours. I’ve no idea how we’ve all managed to stay awake when we were ready to crash when we first arrived. ‘We’ll go before we leave in the morning.’
Zaza stuffs her phone into her bag after quickly tapping away on it. ‘Hmm?’ she asks, her mind having been elsewhere.
‘The tablets,’ says Vicky.
‘We might not even need them anyway,’ she replies.
‘Fail to prepare …’ Vicky sighs. ‘I’ve read it can get pretty bad.’
‘That’s why they gave us that tea at the hotel, and I bet they offer us a mug before we leave here too,’ I state, looking around for the waiters who’ve been rushed off their feet the whole time we’ve been here. ‘They’ll be loading us up with that on the trek. The guides do not want us all getting sick. That would be a massive ball ache for them!’ I add, remembering the amount of moaning I heard some people do while I was travelling around with Pia and how it really killed the vibe for everyone else.
