My memory of getting back last night is a little hazy, but I do remember coming in and being very excited while spilling the news about our Peru trip. Liam wasn’t best pleased and told me so before huffing off to bed, leaving me to feel pretty miffed.
Now that I’m not drunk and giddy the guilt has started to creep in. Maybe I should’ve consulted him before saying I was in, especially as I’ll have to dip into our savings to do it. I don’t think we even got on to that part of the conversation last night.
I definitely could’ve handled the situation better, but I don’t regret our plan and I’m glad we were with Mike when he found the note. Not only did us seeing it mean he has to see the Rule through, but it’s also given Vicky and me something I think we both need, too. I just wish Liam saw it the same way. It’s like he’s annoyed that I’m doing something without him, as though my engagement ring has suddenly morphed into chains. Or maybe that’s a feeling that’s on me and nothing to do with him and his actions at all. It’s another reminder that one moment you’re footloose and fancy free and the next you’ve signed your life away in a relationship and having to consult another person about every single aspect of it. It’s draining. Where’s the fun and spontaneity?
Pulling back the bedsheets I head downstairs for a coffee and some bircher before I have to start getting ready for work. Liam wanders in just as I’m grating an apple into my cold bowl of oats. He’s puffing away in that post-workout way and streams of sweat drip down his red face.
‘Did you even look at your diary?’ he asks after snatching a breath, leaping straight into it.
‘Gosh, mop yourself up,’ I say, chucking a tea towel at him while screwing up my face. I know some women find the sight of a man dripping in perspiration a turn-on, but I’m not one of them. Instead, it actually makes me feel quite uncomfortable. A little queasy.
‘Za!’ he says, doing what I’ve asked with an exasperated look on his face.
‘Yes …’
‘It’s my brother’s wedding!’ he says, pursing his lips.
‘That’s – that’s –’ I think for a moment, knowing that I saw it when I looked in my diary very hastily last night. ‘That’s the day after I get back.’
‘But we’re travelling up early the day before.’
