  46. THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING

‘No,’ he says, his hands splayed in front of him. ‘I guess you were right earlier. I don’t see all of these treks in quite the same way as people coming out here do. My view has changed over time. My real fascination is with the locals.’

‘So you care about us but you don’t find us interesting?’ Zaza quips.

‘You’re hard work!’ Scott laughs, rolling his eyes at Mike. ‘I’ve already said I thought you were brilliant. This has been one of my most enjoyable trips in a long time. Even though some of you had your moments.’

I feel his leg push into mine. He’s fidgety tonight.

‘Do you have a girlfriend?’ asks Zaza.

‘No …’

‘Lots of admirers?’

Scott blushes. ‘Nothing more than leader lust.’

‘Leader lust,’ I repeat, unable to stop myself from giggling.

‘What?’ he laughs back. ‘It’s an actual thing!’

‘Oh I have no doubt about that. None at all. In fact, I’m relieved to hear it,’ I add, struggling to get the words out through the giggles.

Zaza joins in. When Scott places his hand on my back to see if I’m OK I laugh even harder.

‘It’s not that funny,’ he declares, his eyebrows knitting together into a frown.

‘Oh I know, I know,’ I say, catching my breath. ‘It’s just me being silly.’

‘Right …’ he mutters.

His words and the realization they bring enable me to relax and enjoy the meal. I’m so thankful that I hadn’t allowed my mind to go off to weird and strange places – like me running away to live a life in the mountains with Scott. They should put out a warning ahead of these treks about that one though, it would probably save a few panics.

Once the meal is finished the whole group travels back to the hotel together and, as we’re all off at different times in the morning, we linger outside to say our goodbyes.

I spot Mike swapping numbers with Bronagh and think to do the same with the girls, but before I can suggest it Claire is asking everyone for their Instagram handles. I expect Gillian and Betsy to look back confused or, at the very least, say they’re not on there – but of course they are.

‘Your kids are so cute!’ Sammi says to me once she’s looked me up, flipping her phone to show me a picture I took at the zoo a couple of weeks ago – it’s of me and the kids with chocolate ice-cream smeared across our faces. Our massive grins reveal just how much we loved the day.

See, I do sometimes get it right.

‘Right, I’m off to bed to stalk you all,’ declares Gillian, her arm looped through Betsy’s so the pair of them can leave together. ‘Safe travels home, everyone!’

And with that people start disappearing off inside.
