  46. THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING

Without replying she drops her rucksack and runs off to the loo. When she reappears a few minutes later we’re by our tents, unrolling the mattresses and sleeping bags to set up home for the night. Having already done my own I’ve been working on hers.

‘Thank you,’ she croaks.

‘Need anything else?’ I ask, because she really doesn’t look her best self.

‘Dioralyte?’ she asks, scrunching up her face.

‘Oh mate …’ consoles Mike, mirroring her expression.

‘To be frank, I’ve got no idea which way it wants to come out next, so an Imodium might be good to block one end at least,’ she declares before giving a groan.

‘Shit,’ I mutter.

‘Exactly,’ she nods, her hand over her mouth like she might spew at any second. ‘Think I might just need to lie down and see if this settles.’

‘OK. Well, do you want to have that tent to yourself for a bit? Have a bit of time to see what’s what and try to sleep, it’ll make you feel better, I’m sure. I’ll only be out here and you can shout if you need me,’ I say, knowing that the last place I would want to be when feeling like that is in a tent with someone and being watched.

She nods, too ill to put up a fight and stumbles into the tent, slowly lowering herself into her sleeping bag where she curls into a ball and scrunches her eyes shut with a whimper.

I grab my puffer jacket and close the zip of the tent before pulling out two Double Decker bars. I pass one to Mike.

‘Let’s go perch over there,’ I say, noticing a flattish rock with a scenic view beyond it of the valley we’ve walked through, the herd of alpacas and llamas happily grazing on the grass in front of it.

‘Are you having fun?’ asks Mike before our bums have even landed.

‘Yes … I think so,’ I add with a laugh at my own uncertainty, removing the orange and purple wrapper. ‘It turns out this is definitely something that doesn’t come naturally to me, however, stepping away from everything, stepping away from the comforts – it’s been liberating.’

‘You did bring half of your bathroom cabinet with you,’ he points out, taking a bite of his chocolate bar.

‘That is true,’ I concede, chewing away. ‘But let me tell you that I haven’t touched the majority of it. Next time I won’t even bother.’

I look over to see him smirking.

‘And how are you feeling about everything else?’ he asks after a pause. ‘About Liam and becoming his wife?’

I take a deep breath, pausing in my chocolate eating. ‘Before coming here I had a bit of a thing with a guy from work.’
