‘Morning, guys!’ Scott shouts, as Kevin, Pedro and Rafael appear.
They all wave in return, immediately tending to the donkeys and checking in on Chef Jonny.
‘Hopefully some breakfast will help, but chew on these in the meantime,’ he says, handing over more coca leaves. Chewing on them makes me feel like a pirate. The thought makes me think of the kids and how hilarious they would find it that Mummy is chewing on leaves. Although maybe I shouldn’t tell them about that, they don’t need further encouragement to stick things in their mouths that they shouldn’t. I had to rescue a worm from Barnaby a couple of years ago, and Chloe has a thing about mud.
‘I heard you guys last night,’ Scott says, perching on the rock next to mine. ‘All OK?’
‘I’m sure it will be, but it was a bit shit,’ I say, slightly embarrassed that he overheard us.
‘Treks can cause emotions to run high,’ he says, his hand tapping on my knee in a way I imagine is meant to be comforting but makes me jolt in surprise. ‘You’re away from home, away from your kids. Your husband. Away from everything you know your life to be. It’s overwhelming to be asked to exist like this while pushing your body too. It’s not easy. Emotions do all sorts when we’re pushed.’
‘I have been feeling a bit out of sorts,’ I confess.
‘I’d better keep a close eye on you today then.’
‘Thanks,’ I say, fully aware of my cheeks blushing.
‘Morning,’ calls Zaza.
‘You’re up!’ shouts Scott.
‘You weren’t exactly keeping it down,’ she replies before turning her back and heading to the toilet tent, doing so with a slight limp which I’m guessing is due to the massive blisters on her feet. I don’t know how she’s walking on them at all they looked so sore, but she’s barely complained.
‘Let’s hope your headache goes so you have one less thing to worry about,’ he says, getting up. ‘And if you need anything at all, anything, just let me know. It’s what I’m here for.’
‘Hmph,’ I say, not really able to formulate a proper word as my head just shifted back to that place. What on earth is wrong with me? I don’t want to have sex with my husband but thinking about doing it with this near stranger makes my body the most switched on it’s felt since Chloe arrived.
That’s the point though, isn’t it? I know nothing will come from these embarrassing thoughts, it’s not like when Nick and I met and literally couldn’t keep our hands off each other.
