  46. THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING

Dinner couldn’t come quickly enough and it certainly didn’t disappoint. The main meal was another taste of local cuisine with a marinated beef stir-fry known as lomo saltado. The steak was cooked to perfection in soy sauce, chopped red onion and tomatoes and came with some fluffy white rice. It was delicious. I never have white rice at home, we always opt for brown, and because of that it always feels like such a treat to have it.

By the time dinner has been and gone I’m shattered and longing for bed. I’m ready to let my feet breathe ahead of Scott wrapping them up in the morning (his offer), but thanks to Vicky’s constant mission to keep the kids entertained she produces a pack of UNO cards.

‘UNO?’ asks Scott, walking the remaining empty plates round to Chef Jonny. ‘I was right about you three, you’re wild.’

‘Ha-de-har,’ Vicky giggles before pulling a funny face at him.

‘I can’t remember the last time I played this,’ I say. ‘I know we played it in the flat a lot, but I don’t remember it being fun.’

‘Don’t try and be the cool one,’ jokes Mike, raising his eyebrows at me.

‘You know I am, though. Right?’ I smirk.

‘Are we all playing?’ Vicky calls out, motioning for the whole Lares Trek team to join us.

‘Are you sure?’ Scott asks, sounding surprised yet keen. ‘You don’t just want to play the three of you?’

‘Don’t be daft!’ I say, looking back at Mike. ‘If I’m having to endure this so are you lot.’

‘Smooth,’ he laughs back.

I watch as Kevin looks over to Scott and the others. Clearly this isn’t standard practice as there’s such an awkwardness about whether they should or not. I imagine Scott and Kevin joining us is one thing as they’re with us all the time, but wonder if some guests put a distance between themselves and the rest of the team, as they don’t get to know them while walking.

‘Come on!’ Mike calls, beckoning everyone over and getting us to squidge up so there’s space for us all to sit. Chef Jonny and the two Sherpas, Pedro and Rafael, do so, looking apprehensively between us all.

‘Everyone knows the rules, right?’ Vicky asks, dealing the shuffled pack.

I’m not entirely sure how much English the team can speak, but they take their cards and hide them from each other, whispering behind their hands for further clarity of the rules.

‘You ready?’ asks Vicky, before putting down her first card, and we’re off.
