‘You’ve got a while before we have to get moving again,’ Scott says to the three of us, following us out into the sunshine. He takes off his cap and smoothes back his long hair before putting it on again. ‘Rest your feet, take it all in, and make sure you go to the loo.’
Zaza eyerolls back at him.
‘There’s always the bush,’ he shrugs. ‘Although the next part is a bit tougher to navigate, so you might not want to stray too much from the path. Could end up falling off the edge of a cliff mid-flow.’
‘Cliff?’
‘I might’ve exaggerated,’ Scott smirks as he walks off, Kevin following behind him. ‘Just go to the bog.’
‘He’s such a git,’ Zaza says, smiling back at him, plonking herself down on the ground, her face basking in the sunlight while her arms grab at her puffer jacket to keep out the chill of the breeze. I join her, grabbing my day bag to use as a pillow.
Seconds later I feel Vicky do the same the other side of me.
There’s no distant sound of traffic, no sirens speeding past, no people shouting or music blaring. There’s only the sound of Chef Jonny clearing up and one of the donkeys braying while they rest ahead of being loaded up again.
‘Must be so weird for Kevin,’ Zaza murmurs next to me.
‘In what way?’ I ask.
‘This is his life. What he’s used to, what he’s been brought up to believe and worship. Then he’s got tourists, people like us, coming in and asking a million questions about it, almost questioning the fabric of his beliefs. Must be odd to get his head around,’ she says.
‘Maybe, but there’s a sense of pride when he talks,’ I reason. ‘He never seems caught out by the questions.’
‘You don’t think that’s because he’s heard them all a million times before?’ asks Vicky.
‘No, actually,’ I say, thinking of all the various locals I’ve met in other corners of the world and how they’re always full of interesting facts and stories so different to my own. Some of my favourite moments when Pia and I were off on our adventures were born from having the time to sit, talk and listen. Something that’s robbed from us back at home with our fast-paced lives. It gave us a new appreciation for others and the lives they lead. It’s why we had the let’s-just-go bag – to get away from the nonsense and actually immerse ourselves in life and different environments and the situations people are living in away from the nine-to-five mentality so many of us have had engrained into our psyche.
