Oh, Loz – you know we were both pissed that night. All I remember is one minute you were holding on to me, talking shite, and we crossed the cobbles in Cockburn Street, and the next thing you’d taken a header down the steps of Fleshmarket Close. If you weren’t so drunk I think you might’ve smashed your head open, but you were like rubber… you just flipped and bounced – it all happened so fast. I puked with the shock before I could even come and help you up, and you were greetin’ and shouting and I couldn’t get you up, but then they heard all the commotion down at the Halfway House and a couple of old boys came up to help – they were as pished as us but clearly more used to it, thank fuck! Just one of those mental drunken accidents, doll. No point keeping going over it.

Anyway, listen – I woke up naked in my bunk this morning. As if I would sleep naked on my own? You know what I’m like. Violet was asleep in the other bunk, facing away from me, but I dunno, I had this feeling – like I could sense that just a moment before I moved, she’d been watching me. I was all bare under the covers. Mortified!

I’ve decided not to mention it, TBH. I think she might have a bit of a crush on me, but she’s too intense. I think she thinks we had a ‘moment’ at the nomadic festival, but I was so off my tits I can’t remember a thing…

Love you, doll. Can’t wait to see you.

P.S. Good for Greg. I told you, I don’t want to talk about him, and I don’t even care! I wouldn’t even care if it was you he was seeing. You’d be welcome to him. I was pissed off for a while, but I’m over it. Totally. OK?

When I wake up, Carrie is gone – her bed unmade, rumpled clothes tossed in the corner next to her rucksack, which is spilling its contents over the bunk – as if she has dressed and left in a hurry. I’d spent most of the night lying here, watching her. She was a restless sleeper, maybe more so because of the train than the alcohol, and part of me was watching to make sure she didn’t throw up and choke to death in her sleep.

But mostly I was watching her because I like watching her.
