Anyway. A broken leg can heal, just like a broken heart … and if it hadn’t been for that moment, she’d never have ended up on this trip alone.

She’d never have met Violet.

Carrie smiles at the woman at the gate as she scans her boarding card. She’s looking forward to going home. The trip has been fun, but completely removed from reality, and it’s time she got back to it.

She clicks on BBC News while walking along the gangway, and the headline jumps out at the top of the page:

UK WOMAN ARRESTED IN BERLIN:
SUSPECTED OF MULTIPLE MURDERS

Poor Violet … or Veronica. Or whoever she really is. It’s not often you get to hang out with a real-life psychopath and escape unscathed.

Who knows who anyone really is, anyway?

Sure, Carrie did a bad thing. A stupid thing. But she’s been paying for it since. The unbearable guilt eating away at her, trying to swallow her whole. The only way to block it out was with drink, and drugs … and toying with Violet. She’d had no idea what she was dealing with there. She shudders. She’s had a lucky escape.

She slides into her seat – window, near the back – and quickly checks her emails. There’s one from Laura, from her alternative email address – they’d had to use covert ops while Violet had control of her real email:

Well done, love!! They got her! I was so worried!! Please tell me you’re on your way home?! Can’t wait to see you! X

Carrie smiles and types a quick reply:

On plane. Can’t wait to see you too! X

It’s almost the truth.

She is looking forward to seeing Laura again. She has been Carrie’s best friend since they were five years old.

They need each other.

No one has to find out what really happened that night when Laura fell down the steps. If there’s one thing Carrie has learned from Violet, it’s that you can’t always trust people, no matter how much you love them. Carrie herself turned Violet into the police without a second thought. You can’t have people like that roaming the streets, can you? Seeing Violet that last time, drinking the champagne, Carrie had felt a weight lift off her – the fear and guilt she’d felt since she’d left home for the trip of a lifetime was grabbed by the bubbles and popped away.
