  56. Don't miss out!

The carriage began to slow down when another loud sound tore through the air again, frightening them further, just as a similar sound followed closely behind. Immediately, she recognized what it was; the sound of a gun.

Leaning to the side, Henrietta glanced out of the window, a soft sigh drifting from her lips. “Ethan?”

Gretchen heard Henrietta's low whisper and her gaze immediately flew to the maid who tightened her hold on Ellie, joy and fear making for a terrible combination in her heart —while she was happy Ethan had found them, she was afraid Ellie would be hurt in the rescue attempt.

Praying desperately that nothing would harm Ellie, she heard the door to the carriage opening, and turned to the side in time to see Ethan standing there with a revolver aimed at Lady Hall.

“Out!” Anger clouded his eyes.

“Ethan...” Gretchen whispered, turning frantically from the barrel of his gun, to Ellie who was now beyond hysterical.

“I wouldn't do that if I were you, Lord Williams, seeing as your child's life is in danger as well.” Henrietta motioned to the knife that was dangerously close to Ellie's neck.

“Get out of the carriage!” Ethan gave the orders, as if oblivious to the fact that there was a knife held to Ellie's neck.

“Ethan, don't!” Gretchen yelled but he ignored her. “Ethan!”

“I shall give this command one more time, Lady Hall and if you do not obey, I shall open fire on you.” Ethan's voice was low and menacing; Gretchen had never seen him this way before. He appeared calm considering the situation at hand and while Gretchen knew Henrietta would have loved to be in control, Ethan was the one in control.

Gretchen watched with mouth agape as Henrietta lifted her skirt and climbed down the carriage. Ethan immediately turned the gun to the maid who seemed to be trembling in fear as she followed suit.

“Ethan...” Gretchen called but he wouldn't even look at her as he turned away from the carriage.

She immediately climbed down the carriage as well, standing close to the maid who held Ellie. Ethan's gun was still pointed at the maid and with the dangerous look on his face it was quite obvious he wouldn't hesitate to shoot the maid. The only problem with that was the fact that Gretchen feared a bullet would get into the child as well.

“Hand Elizabeth to Gretchen,” Ethan gave the orders in a low growl.

“Obey him and you die.” Henrietta called from where she stood on the maid's left hand side while Gretchen stood on the right. “Isn't that right, Lord Williams?”

“Frankly Lady Hall, the only person I'm eager to kill is you.” Ethan said, turning briefly to Henrietta before turning back to the maid. “Give the child to her mother, right now!”

“I've always wondered, Lord Williams, how all of this would end.” Henrietta smiled. “I never pictured you holding a gun to my head. I pictured myself walking down that aisle to you, being your wife, having your children! ” Henrietta yelled and with one fast swoop, the child was in her arms. She held Elizabeth before her like a shield and retrieved the knife from the maid, pressing it to Ellie's neck.
