“Make that a double order.” Gavin laughed, like he was thinking about a personal joke. “I was eyeing the same thing. I’ll tell you why later.”
Val wondered what was so funny. And what the mystery was. All she could think about was oysters and libido… do mussels count too? Get your mind back to professional issues, she told herself.
“Excellent choice. I’ll get that in while you look over the menu,” Aiden said.
As soon as Aiden left Val cleared her thoughts, preferring not to press Gavin about the mussels, at least not now, and said, “What did Perry Logan have to say about Bridget Morgan?”
“There’s a discrepancy between the Morgans’ accounts of their daughter Bridget and what Perry told us about her. Perry said she was crazy, not developmentally disabled.”
“Holy crap, Mitch.” Val’s eyes went wide, stunned by what she just heard. “Should we see for ourselves?”
“That’s going to be tough. Our attempt to meet with Bridget was politely declined by Mr. and Mrs. Morgan, stating Bridget’s mental well-being and that she’s not up for something like that, remember. I could try to put some pressure on, but I have no cause for a warrant so all that’s going to do is piss them off and get us no further than where we were at the beginning. Unless they change their minds, she’s off limits.”
“I can understand. This family has all but one child dead. Of course they’re protecting her.” Val sat back in her chair. “I know how we can get a better handle on Bridget Morgan’s mental state. The funeral for Gabrielle and Adam is Monday morning. I’m sure Bridget will be there. Gwen and I were planning on attending.”
“Dr. Maddox released the bodies?” Gavin looked stunned and his voice had a sharpness to it. “I didn’t hear about this.”
“He had no choice. The Morgans were pressuring him. A lot. Plus, Dr. Maddox was officially finished with both autopsies. Tissue samples had been collected and toxicology was still running all necessary tests. It will take a couple more days to find out what, if any, foreign substances Gabrielle and Adam had in their system.” Val wondered why Gavin was worried about the bodies being released. Dr. Maddox told him himself right after the autopsies that he collected all he could, even more than he should, really, in case he had to release the bodies prematurely. There was nothing more for the medical examiner’s office to do that required Gabrielle and Adam in person and after considerable pressure from the Morgans, Dr. Maddox agreed to release the remains of their daughter and grandson for burial.
“Did he save hair samples?” Gavin said, anxious for the answer.
They both stopped talking as Aiden placed a bowl of mussels in front of them, along with a plate of beautifully toasted bread and refills of their wine.
