Mrs. Morgan sat at the kitchen table. Stoically. Staring straight ahead. Not speaking. She’d let Gavin and Warren in nearly fifteen minutes ago. She’d been pleasant, inviting them into the kitchen, even though she’d just been served with a search warrant. But as soon as Gavin demanded to see her husband, she shut down.

“Mrs. Morgan, where’s Mr. Morgan?” Gavin sat at the table across from her and leaned forward. “Mrs. Morgan, tell us where he is.”

“Detective, do you know that Morgan Foods nearly collapsed twice.” She put two fingers in the air to emphasize the number. “I come from a great amount of money. A lot of people don’t know that. When James married me, my money saved Morgan Foods; the first time. The second saving came after the death of my son-in-law.” She smiled and nodded as if she already knew Gavin was aware of this.

Gavin’s phone buzzed again with another text message, same unknown number. This time he opened it. With his eyes still on the screen he stood and shouted, “Mrs. Morgan, where is your husband?”

Mrs. Morgan smiled and calmly said, “Upstairs.”

Gavin pointed to two officers. “Stay here with her.” He pulled his gun from the holster and looked at Warren. “Let’s go. Now!”

“Mitch, what the hell?” Warren yelled. He drew his weapon too. “What is going on?”

“Val! She’s in this house.” Gavin took off down the hall. Gavin and Warren ran up the stairs two at a time and began opening bedroom doors. After the fourth door, he froze. Val was hovering over someone lying on the bed.

“Val! Are you okay?” Gavin lowered his weapon and rushed towards her.

“Yes,” Val said, her gaze on the lifeless body of Mr. Morgan. “He’s dead. Has been for a while.”

Gavin pulled out his phone. “I need an ambulance and backup at 130 Lincoln Parkway.”

“Claudia is dead too,” Val said. “Where’s Mrs. Morgan?”

“Two officers are with her.” Gavin tucked his gun back in the holster and leaned over Val to get a look at James Morgan. “Double suicide?”

“No. Double murder.”

Gavin’s eyes went wide.

“Take a look around the corner,” Val said. “In the side room.”

Gavin and Warren rounded the corner.

“Holy crap, what is this place?” Gavin yelled out.

“It’s another greenhouse. Of sorts. Pretty sophisticated for an indoor setup. It’s complete with artificial lights and temperature control. The yew tree is in the far corner. You can see where someone cut the branches. Angel’s trumpets should be to your left.” There were several other varieties of plants that Val could not identify.

“Is this Mr. Morgan’s greenhouse?” Gavin yelled out.

A uniformed officer burst in. “We heard you yell from downstairs and then everything went quiet.”

“Where’s Mrs. Morgan?” Val asked him, as she quickly stood back from Mr. Morgan.

“In the kitchen, with another officer.”
