Chapters (49)
This was an android. Her last two phones were androids. She had to do a hard reboot on them every now and then, mostly to get rid of any software that made the phones run slow. Hey, she never argued about doing this because it fixed the problem. Each time, it made her reset the password.
Jesus, how in the hell did I do this? The memory was a blur, but she remembered the first step. Val turned the phone back off and then pressed the volume down and the sleep/wake buttons together. Yes, I remember, this starts a special diagnostics mode. The prompts will come on the screen.
Once the first one came on, Val pushed the volume down button over the choices and highlighted Recovery Mode Option. She used the power button to select it. During this type of reboot, the touchscreen is not used. Thank God it was all working as it should. Once this step was done, she pressed and held the power and pushed the volume up to highlight the Wipe Data/Factory Reset option, then pressed power to select. She tapped volume down to highlight ‘yes’ on the next prompt as it asked her to confirm. Val pressed power one more time to complete the reboot. The status circled. And then kept circling, making no progress. No! Please work… Please work! Then finally it asked “Restore as new?” Hell yes, I want to start as new.
Next, it asked to reset a new password. Let’s go with 1, 2, 3 and 4. Val typed it and verified. The phone opened. Bingo! I’m in. The battery was very low, less than 20%. The fact that it was turned off this whole time was probably why it still had any power left at all.
Val punched in Gavin’s number. Nothing. “No signal,” the phone said. No! No! No! She moved around the room, extending her arm, holding the phone up in all directions. She called Gavin again, and again. And again.
No signal, it mocked.
Val typed a text.
Mitch, help me. I’ve been kidnapped.
Sending message displayed. The status symbol twirled and twirled. It was no use. This message was never going to send.
I have to get out of here. She wanted to scream. Panic started to overwhelm Val and she threw the phone on the bed. Taking a deep breath, she tried to calm down, steady her breathing as her heart raced. I got in somehow. There has to be a way out.
