“Yes. She never married my father. He was out of my life shortly after I was born. My mother was busy trying to put food on our table, rather than trying to fill her dating schedule,” Jennifer said with a sharp bitterness.
Gavin found Jennifer to be quick and pointed in her responses. He believed she wasn’t dumb, or easily fooled, either. Jennifer seemed like the type of person who would notice things. “Did you ever spend any time in the Holbright house, specifically the one on Lincoln Parkway?”
Jennifer crossed her legs. “One summer I did. I had a part-time job working for the Holbrights. I helped the gardener by weeding, planting, mulching. Basic landscaping work.”
“How old were you?” Gavin asked.
“Sixteen,” she said, as if she was waiting for the next question. Jennifer appeared to be staying two steps ahead of them.
“Is this how you knew Gabrielle Morgan?”
“I didn’t know Gabrielle Morgan at all. I think I told you, detective. The maid’s daughter did not hang out with the daughters of the Holbrights or Morgans.” Jennifer hesitated for a second. “Or Arias.”
“You knew about Gabrielle then. And Bethany too?” Gavin sensed Jennifer purposely told him about Bethany. “How did this happen?”
“The summer I worked for the Holbrights I was assigned to clean out the wooded area in the back of the house. Rake the dead leaves, cut small branches and pull weeds. I had a good view of the Morgans’ property through the fence and I used to watch these three girls swim in the pool. I wondered what it would be like to be one of them. Not to have a care in the world. Instead, I shoveled dirt and raked old dead leaves from between trees. I was scratched from branches, had dirt under my nails. Sweated all day.” Jennifer sat upright in her chair, proud. “I knew one of those three girls was Melinda, and later learned who the other two were.”
“How did you learn this?” Warren asked.
“I asked my mother who Melinda’s friends were,” Jennifer said with a sarcastic tone as if Warren was stupid.
“Did you watch these girls on the day the Morgan twins drowned?” Gavin asked.
