The mausoleum was big enough to hold twelve crypts, six on each side. A small bench was at the far end, under a stained-glass window depicting saints Val did not recognize. The bench was obviously placed so the living could sit while paying their respects. Val looked at the names carved in the marble wall. James Morgan Sr., who was akin to a Rockefeller or Vanderbilt in his day, lay interred on the top row. His wife, Victoria, was placed on the top row across from him. Their children, Edmond and James Jr., underneath and Elizabeth, James Jr’s wife was across from him. Spots for Gabrielle’s father, James III and Rachel were one more row down, marked with a birth date only. Val shuddered. She’d never want to see her name on a crypt.
Poor Edmond, though, he was here alone with his parents. Val moved closer to see his beginning and end carved in stone. The poor boy was only seventeen. No wonder why.
The twins were on the fourth row down with Gabrielle and Adam, across from them. Val stood back as the cemetery crew prepared to open the vault.
With a pull of a crowbar, Gabrielle’s marble placard was removed and the coffin exposed. The twins were next.
“They’re remarkably well preserved,” Dr. Maddox said of the twins.
He was right. They looked like they died yesterday. The boy was in a navy-blue suit and the girl in a blue velvet dress. Her blonde hair hung in long curls. “This is what good embalming and a tightly sealed crypt will do.” He stood back and looked impressed. “I can’t believe even the clothing is preserved on these two.”
“Maybe money does buy everything,” Warren said.
“Okay, Val, let’s do an autopsy,” Dr. Maddox said.
Three hours later both were finished. There were no new or remarkable findings. Dr. Maddox’s main goal was to collect samples for toxicology screening so that Zoe could look for poisons, something that wasn’t done during the first autopsy.
Dr. Maddox stripped off his gloves. “Gabrielle and Adam are next.”
Val dropped the samples off to Zoe immediately after Dr. Maddox was finished. Zoe had the testing completed by the next day. Bethany’s results were still pending.
“Val, this is an easy one,” Zoe said. “Almost too easy. I guessed heavy metal as a possible source of poison for Gabrielle, so I started here with the twins. I was right. The twins were being poisoned with cadmium. It’s in their bones, hair and nails.”
“Cadmium?”
