“The crime scene techs are going through her vehicle now, so we’ll see if they find evidence of that. The parking lot was plowed shortly before she came home. Any tracks in the snow have been obliterated by new snowfall.”
“No one follows her in?” Val asked.
“No. This is the only way in or out and she’s the only one to go in, other than people who live here, and they all check out.”
“Are there any other entrances. Like a service entrance?” Val remembered these wealthy people having other ways in or out for the hired help.
“No again, but there is a maintenance door on the side of the building. The door is practically hidden, that’s the way it was designed. No security camera at that entrance, but the security is pretty tight there. You need a key and code to get in. It opens to a maintenance stairwell—again no cameras.” His gaze went back to the footage of Bethany.
“Only someone very familiar with this condo would know that.” Val raised her eyebrows at Gavin, confused as to why he would dismiss this fact. “And you’re not concerned about this at all?”
“Outside of that door, there are no tracks in the eighteen inches of snow that fell today. No one has been through it all day.” Gavin shut off the video and walked towards the exit of the tent, zipping his jacket up. “Are you ready to go into Bethany’s condo?”
Val entered the condo trailing behind Gavin and Warren. As she looked around, the luncheon with Melinda and Bethany flashed in her mind. Her feeling that day was this condo exuded a sense of power. Now, it just seemed defeated. Like Bethany down on the ground.
“Can I look around, Mitch?” Val asked.
“Put your gloves on,” he instructed. “And also suit up.”
She didn’t need to be told. Val knew the drill. After taking off her coat and grabbing a pair of latex gloves, she also put on a Tyvek suit and shoe coverings.
Val started in the kitchen. There were no glasses or dishes in the sink. If Bethany came home drunk, she didn’t have anything further. Val hadn’t seen the kitchen the first time she was here, and glanced around now at the white cabinets, black hardware, red accents. She went down the hall, past several crime scene techs and looked in the guest powder room. It was a fairly large space, but it consisted of a toilet and sink only. All the hardware accents were brushed silver. Tile, speckled with red flecks.
