Gavin set down the newspaper article that was found in Gabrielle’s safe deposit box. “Let me show you this. Maybe it will jog your memory.” He put his finger next to the picture. “This is you and Bethany?”
Perry leaned over, took a long look, and let out a held breath. “Yes.”
“Take a peek here.” Gavin slid his finger up to the date on the top of the article. “This picture was taken before you married Gabrielle. Actually it’s about a year before, correct? Hell, that’s before you even were dating Gabrielle.”
Perry nodded, his eyes everywhere but on Gavin’s.
“So, Gabrielle stole you from Bethany? Not the other way around?” Warren tapped his pen on the table. “Did you know that Bethany was poor and Gabrielle was loaded?”
“Poor? Bethany wasn’t poor,” Perry scoffed.
“Oh, yes she is. And was,” Warren said.
“Well, I didn’t know that.” Perry sat back down and squashed his cigarette in a tray that sat on the table. “Look, detective, I’m not proud about what I did back then. Yes, I was with Bethany first. It was nothing serious. Gabrielle came on to me and I fell in love with her. I’m sorry I hurt Bethany.” Perry pointed at Warren. “Gabrielle was not sorry, though. I found out later how much not. It was during one of her crazy episodes.”
“Crazy episodes?” Gavin asked.
“I told you Gabrielle would have violent mood swings. She got in my face several times and told me that if it wasn’t for her wanting, and I quote, to fuck me to fuck Bethany over, well I’d have my ass living in some shithouse.”
Warren looked around at the kitchen. “Maybe she was right.”
Perry, for a moment, looked like he was going to lunge at Warren. Warren just crossed his arms, waiting. “Look, asshole, yeah Gabrielle stole me from Bethany and I went to Bethany in the end hoping to get her to take me back.”
“Because your rich wife was no longer rich after her daddy disowned her for marrying you, and you didn’t know that Bethany was also poor?” Warren pressed.
Perry stood up, shoving his chair back so hard it fell over. His chest heaved as he glared at Warren.
Gavin intercepted quickly. “Did Gabrielle know Bethany’s family lost their money?”
“If she did she never said anything to me.” Perry spat out the words.
“I’m sure it didn’t sit well with Gabrielle that you went back to Bethany,” Warren said calmly.
“No. It pissed her off to no end. Look, this is the reason why she was so vindictive. She couldn’t get at her, so she got at me.”
“Couldn’t get at her?” Gavin said, confused.
