The door of the apartment block opens while we’re standing, wondering what to do. A man in cycling gear struggles to push his bike out through the narrow entrance. Anna rushes over and volunteers to hold the door open for him, keeping it ajar when he exits.
‘What’s she doing?’ Sienna says watching Elsie walk over to engage with the man.
Her head is shaking from side to side. The cyclist doesn’t recognize the woman in the photo Elsie is holding out for him to look at.
‘Did you say this woman has only been in the country a few weeks?’
I nod. What is Sienna planning?
‘Well, that means she has to have booked somewhere to stay.’
‘Ye, the police thought she was staying in Jury’s. They were wrong. She wasn’t.’
Sienna takes her phone from her jacket pocket and starts to type. ‘Someone get me the exact address of this place.’ We all respond. Each of us huddled in a narrow hallway in a strange building on a Sunday morning, heads down, searching Google Maps. Except Elsie. Elsie has no phone. I must remember to buy her one.
‘Aston Quay Apartments!’ Louise shouts, like she’s answering a question on a quiz game. Sienna continues to concentrate on whatever she’s doing. I’m trying to concentrate on breathing. The thought of Amber being somewhere in this building and not being able to find her haunts me. We have one shot at this before I ring the cops.
‘There’s two.’
‘Two what?’
‘Two apartments listed on Airbnb for this building.’ A sigh of admiration. How did she think to check that?
‘15 and 10… So, which do we try first?’ Sienna looks at me for an answer like I have an extra sense at play here. I don’t. ‘10… but what do we do, knock?’
‘We’ll see when we get there.’ Donna moves towards the elevator. We’re all about to step inside when Amy says, ‘Maybe some of us should wait here. In case she makes a run for it or something.’
Good thinking, Amy. But I think she’s just scared to come in. I don’t blame her.
‘You and you.’ Donna points at Marie and Amy.
‘And me,’ Elsie says, handing me the picture. She doesn’t want to come either.
‘Good luck.’
The door of the elevator closes and there’s silence. Each of us watching the buttons light up until we get to the third floor where apartment 10 is located. The corridor is empty when we step out. Not a peep. The air smells stale like a room after a party. My legs begin to wobble beneath me but I think of Amber, take a deep breath and move on. When we locate number 10, we look at each other. The door is grey like all the others. I put my hands together in prayer and hold them to my mouth. Every part of me is shaking.
