‘Sal, it’s only for a trial period, couple of weeks at the most, if it doesn’t work out I’ll tell them.’ He may as well be talking to the wall because I don’t want to hear. Taking my phone from the table I leave the room. No slamming doors for me, although I do feel like it. This whole nightmare is tumbling down on us because of Tom’s actions and lack of them. I’m glad Amber realizes that. With Tom wallowing in his own thoughts, I head to bed. I’m not sure what I feel about him anymore. Even when he frittered away my money on a useless idea, I still loved him, felt safe with him. Now I’m not so sure.
The soft glow of moonlight creeps in through a small gap in the curtains. Listening to Tom’s noisy breathing fill the silence, I consider what will happen when that Kenny chap comes here to stay. Where will he sleep?
The only good thing to come from this evening is Tom’s no longer the main suspect, they have their woman. The sooner they find her the better, I’m sick of the cops in our life.
The trial. Jesus, if the kid is living with us it’s bound to impact on the whole family. And what if they never find her? How long will we have to be extra vigilant for? My mind races. I can’t stop worrying about how this is affecting Amber.
Cian and Aaron are too young to understand what’s going on. Plenty of steam trains and ice cream and they’ll be fine. But Amber, what must she think of her father? Of Kenny? How is she going to cope? I twist and turn all night without any answers making their way into my head.
Chapter Thirty-Three
Tempted as I am to stay in bed and ignore the day, I can’t. I have to get up, get breakfast, take the kids to crèche, go to work, take a half day from work, come home again, because this is the day Kenny McCarthy is laying his hat under my roof.
His expected arrival is sometime between three and four when Tom and I will be here to settle him in. He’s moving into the boys’ playroom. Tom will spend today changing the room into a bedroom.
The boys will now have to push Thomas, James, Percy and Sam around the floor in front of the TV. I’m dying to see how that works out. It all sounded fine to Tom when he was making his plans but wait until Liverpool are about to take a penalty and Cian or Aaron jump up in front of the TV announcing the arrival of Arthur at the station. We’ll see how much he likes it then.
