Bonnie heard his phone ring, saw him pull it from his jeans pocket and glance at the screen. She watched as he switched it to silent and buried it away. She knew it must have been Sophie but she looked away, pretending she hadn’t seen a thing.

It became late, the publican forcing them onto the street despite their pleas to stay.

They walked together, too close, their fingers brushing.

‘This has been fun,’ she said, as though it was something they’d be able to do again.

‘We always had fun.’ His footsteps slowed, turning to face her. They were unnecessarily close, every inch of her body magnetised to his.

Their fingers intertwined. Words floated away, but their breathing was heavy, thick with anticipation.

There was a quick flicker of hesitation, but they ignored it …

Their lips touched hungrily, starved of one another for so many years. They were greedy, grasping and forceful. Bonnie was drugged with passion, lust pulsing through her veins.

She wanted more.

She needed more.

Their bodies pressed up against one another, fitting together just like she remembered, better than she remembered.

‘I want you.’

She’d nodded, breathless. ‘We can go back to my studio.’ It was close by, only around the corner.

He was impatient and pinned Bonnie up against a wall, their mouths finding each other, hands exploring.

Her skin prickled with expectation, goosebumps rushing over her body. ‘Let’s go,’ she eventually whispered, winded, heart racing.

They began to walk but only managed a few steps before they were kissing again. Their mouths were hard and fervent, needing to make up for all those years apart. Bonnie was flooded with memories of exploration, experimentation and pleasure. He’d been the first guy she’d ever slept with and both of them had been eager and willing.

When they reached the door to Bonnie’s studio, Oliver pulled her close for another kiss, unable to wait another second. ‘Let’s go inside,’ he murmured into her mouth.

Bonnie reached into her handbag for her keys; she dug around but couldn’t find them. She dropped her bag to the ground, collapsing onto her knees, rummaging furiously.

Car headlights cast over them like a spotlight. Bonnie looked up from her bag, holding up her arm to shield her eyes from the bright light.

‘Shit.’ Oliver’s voice pierced the air in hushed panic. ‘It’s Sophie.’

Bonnie immediately wanted to throw up. ‘What?’ Her heart had been racing with desire, but it was suddenly pounding with fear.

Sophie brought the car to a stop and pushed open the door. ‘Here you are.’ She looked at Oliver with a stare Bonnie had no idea how to interpret.

‘Hey,’ Oliver said.

Bonnie murmured hello too, her hand finally scooping the keys out of her bag.

‘You two look pretty hammered.’ Sophie’s tone had been terrifyingly cheerful.

Oliver laughed, nervously and too loud. ‘We just had a couple of drinks at the pub.’
