  67. Book Club Discussion Questions

‘Mmmm.’ Sophie nodded. ‘Plenty to catch up on, I imagine.’

‘Years’ worth.’ Oliver’s voice was a little shaky as he took a quick glance at Bonnie. ‘How’d you know where I was?’

‘I tracked your phone.’ She smiled as though it was a completely acceptable thing to do.

Bonnie’s eyes darted back and forth between the engaged couple, waiting, expecting Oliver to react about being tracked.

But he didn’t. He just accepted it with a nod, perhaps a little frustrated with himself for not realising how she’d done it.

‘I saw on my phone that you’d left the pub and thought you might need a lift,’ Sophie said.

‘Thanks, Soph,’ Oliver managed, casting a look towards Bonnie, his eyes wide, his face white.

‘I thought it would have been easier to grab a taxi from the pub rather than walk this way?’ Sophie’s question was loaded, her eyes like laser beams on Oliver’s face.

Bonnie expected Sophie’s question to be met with silence, or at least a fumbled reply. But instead, Ollie was seamless in saying, ‘There were none around and Bonnie wanted to show me some of her work.’

Huh? Don’t dump me in it! Bonnie fought the urge to slap him on the arm.

Sophie seemed to accept his explanation whether she believed it or not. ‘Hop in, Bonnie, we’ll give you a lift too.’

No! She almost screamed.

But only minutes later, she was in the back of Sophie and Oliver’s car. Her head was spinning, her stomach churning, listening to Sophie chatter on about the band she’d found to do music at their wedding.

Bonnie had been moments from tearing off Oliver’s clothes, moments from having his hands on her body, moments from shuddering relief.

But guilt and shame quickly replaced the feeling of euphoria.

‘There you go,’ Sophie said cheerily as the car pulled up out the front of Bonnie’s place. Sophie commented on how homely it looked and that she’d love to come for a cuppa one day.

‘Thanks for the lift,’ Bonnie said, trying to open the car door, but it wouldn’t budge.

‘Oh, the child lock is still on,’ Sophie said. ‘I had Bec and her kids in here today. Help her, would you, Ollie?’

Oliver got out of the front passenger seat and opened Bonnie’s door. He stared at her, his eyes apologetic.

She pushed herself out of the car, her feet unsteady as they touched the ground. Oliver reached out to her, but the moment he touched her, desire came flooding back. Her lips were raw; she could still taste him.

Bonnie gulped. She’d been moments away from sleeping with a man she knew was engaged to somebody else. What was wrong with her?
