Bonnie almost gags when she realises that once the first trimester is over they’ll probably do a really cutesy pregnancy post. Bonnie’s seen enough of them in her newsfeed before. Photographs of his shoes, her shoes and baby shoes all lined up together. The couple proudly holding up their ultrasound photo with a caption like Already looks like Dad. Or maybe they’d go for something simpler, like their hands intertwined in a heart shape on her belly.
The familiar feeling of emptiness strikes hard, like a whip lashing her insides over and over. In the back of her mind, she’s been fooling herself thinking that she might finish the show and Oliver will have left Sophie and be waiting for her. Now she imagines them snuggled on the lounge laughing as they watch Bonnie make a fool of herself on national television.
She was stupid to ever think she had a future with him. It’s time to get over him and move on. She owes it to herself to give Ty a proper chance.
Chapter 24
24
‘Where’s Sienna?’ Darcy queries as Ed takes a seat next to her on the pub stool. They’re meeting for Sunday afternoon drinks.
Ed pauses for only a second, ripping off his news like a bandaid. ‘We broke up.’
‘What?’ Darcy is floored. ‘When? Why?’ How did she have no idea about this? Why does Ed seem so calm?
‘I really should have grabbed us some drinks before I sat down.’ Ed’s grim, aware Darcy’s going to want to dissect every inch of the break-up.
‘Ed!’
‘Okay, we broke up last weekend because she’s in love with some other guy.’
Darcy feels her heart crumble for him. ‘What?’ Her head suddenly feels like muck, trying to figure it out. ‘I’m so sorry. Why didn’t you tell me before now?’
‘You’d just gotten engaged.’ Ed says. ‘I wasn’t sure when I should slide it into conversation.’
Darcy thinks back to last Sunday afternoon when she’d gotten back from Gloucester and told Ed every single detail about Drew’s proposal, not to mention the fight they’d had earlier that day and Drew’s decision to come back to Sydney once the term is finished. She had probably talked for about two hours straight. Come to think of it, she probably hadn’t even asked where Sienna was. Ed had just sat there with his Thai takeaway, nodding in all the right places.
‘You should have told me to shut up,’ she groans. ‘You must have thought I was so self-absorbed going on and on about everything.’
‘Nothing new,’ Ed jokes.
Darcy whacks him across the arm. ‘Come on, tell me what happened.’
‘All right, all right, but I’m getting us some drinks first.’
