“Had you told me that right after he was killed, I doubt forgiveness would’ve come quickly, but I have children. I realize what I would do for them, to keep them with me, and to keep them safe. Even though I think you were wrong, how can I condemn you for that?”
“All those things I said that night,” Judice said, her voice still soft. “I loved him, and I mourn him still. Despite what happened and how we ended, he was a good man, and losing him was what made me want to punish him. You can’t force someone to love you, though, can you?”
“You can’t,” Emma said, “but I find that when it’s right, you’ll see the difference. What we thought we couldn’t live without is really only a learning experience, and it’s what you gauge the real thing against. Sometimes you luck out and find the right one on your first try. Turns out the right one for you is a little louder, and way more persistent.” Emma smiled. “If anything, your life will never be boring. And if it counts for anything, I really think he loves you.”
“That’s what he says, but the man has a famous roving eye.”
“I think those days are behind him,” Cain said, and Judice’s smile finally widened. “It took him a lot of years to mature, but I think it’s finally come.”
“Thanks for talking with me. Have a great evening.” Judice stood and waited as if to be dismissed. “I never expected your kindness, but you’ve been more than gracious.”
“Call in the morning, and give Colin our love if you talk to him tonight,” Cain said. They watched as Judice walked away to a small table close to the door. “What do you think that’s about?”
“It’s Colin, honey, so it could be just about anything. I love your family, but I’m praying none of the kids take after him.”
Cain thought of the big man who seldom thought much about what he was doing, and even less about what came out of his mouth. He was reckless, quick to temper, and way too immature for a man his age. “Let’s hope my mother hears your wishes and has the power to grant them. If you think he’s something now, you should’ve experienced him growing up.”
“I can about imagine, but I have a feeling we’ll get our share of that with Hannah. That kid can drive you to drink at times, and she’s only five.”
“She’s high-spirited, is all.”
“You’re a generous grader, my love.”
