“We’ve never been here together,” Emma said as they drove down Michigan Avenue toward the river.

“We should plan more short trips like this. It could be like an extended date night.”

Lou opened her door as Sabana opened Emma’s, but Emma waited for her to come around to get out.

“There’s no denying what a romantic you are, my love.” Emma took her hand and laughed as they entered the lobby with a number of heavily armed men. It seemed like everyone around them turned and stared. “You also know how to make an entrance.”

Cain laughed as one of their guys from New Orleans held up a key card. Their rooms were on the top floor, and there were already two guards outside their door. Once she and Emma were in for the night, the guys would head next door, but for now she wanted to limit access.

“He’s waiting in the sitting room, ma’am,” the older of the two said.

She opened the door and went in first with Emma’s safety in mind. Not that she thought Nathan Mosley was in any way a threat, but old habits had kept them alive, and she was never going to change. “Nathan,” she said. He stood up when he saw her.

The small man had on a purple pinstripe suit with matching purple shoes, and she smiled at his outlandish sense of style. Considering what he did for a living, she would’ve thought he would’ve been a lot lower key.

“Ms. Casey.” Nathan held his hands out and stepped forward. “I never expected to hear from you, but it is a pleasure to see you again.”

“Cain, please, and before we begin, I’d like to introduce my wife, Emma.”

“However do you leave the house and leave this woman behind?” Nathan said, letting her go and taking both of Emma’s hands in his so he could kiss them. “You are a beauty.”

“Thank you,” Emma said, sounding delighted.

“What can I do for you, Cain?” Nathan asked after kissing Emma’s hands again.

“Before we start, I’d like to tell you that I’m not asking what I did before. Your integrity is important to your reputation as a businessman, and I’m not going to compromise that.”

“What you asked for when we first met was in the spirit of keeping my work intact. I didn’t mind giving up a few of my secrets to keep such a wonderful young woman safe.” Nathan sat once they had and crossed his legs, bringing his red socks into view.

“Thank you for all you did for Dallas. She’s my closest friend, and she deserves all the peace your work has given her.” Emma was sincere, and Cain would do what was necessary to keep her as well as those they cared for whole.
