“Aside from you and Joe and your team, nothing, except the guys I have looking into what happened last night. Why do you ask?”
“It’s something Emma Casey told me in the bathroom at Vincent’s. I didn’t approach her, but we did have a conversation.” She remembered how adamant Emma had been, and she also knew how protective both Emma and Cain were of their children. “Usually she does a good job of pretending I don’t exist, but not this time. I think if she could’ve gotten away with it, she would’ve slapped me.”
“You didn’t mention it before you left,” Annabel said but she didn’t sound upset.
“To tell you the truth, Joe and I started checking before we shipped out to see if there was something to what she said. We asked around to try to tie this to anyone else, but Emma was convinced someone from our side approached Hannah or Hayden Casey.”
“The Casey children aren’t people we’re interested in. Maybe years from now if they go into the family business,” Annabel said with a small laugh. “But she has to know we have higher standards than that.”
“I thought it was strange and laughable, but believe me, Emma Casey wasn’t kidding. She also holds what she believes is the higher moral ground because of Cain getting shot.”
“That’s going to haunt us for years, but none of us are at fault for that.”
“I doubt she sees it that way. Are you sure no one who would take the chance of using their kids has anything going?”
“No matter what the Casey family thinks about us, that’s not our style. Children—I think we can all agree, no matter what side of the law you’re on—are off-limits. I’ll check, but I doubt there’s any merit to this. How is everything else working out? How’s Gardner fitting in?”
“Not to belabor the point, ma’am, but something triggered Emma to say that.” She hated to complain about Dylan, but hopefully Annabel would transfer her when the rest of their team got back. “When are Claire and Lionel coming back?” Their team members had been in training for weeks, but that would be ending soon.
“You should have Lionel back by the end of the week, and that didn’t answer my question. Is Gardner working out?” Annabel gave them her full attention by looking directly into the camera.
