“Jasper got hit last night,” Remi said as they sat in the office to have coffee. “He lost a couple of guys and has no idea who did it. Simon told me this morning, along with a message that Jasper would be calling you today,” she said of her personal guard. “Vinny is ready to go to war, but you know Vinny as well as I do. We need to aim him correctly before he goes off and slaughters everyone who looks at him funny.”
“Anyone talking?” Cain asked as she stared out the window. “We all know some of these guys can’t wait to brag. And you’re right, Jasper needs to put a muzzle on Vinny. It’s not the time to blow up the world.”
“That’s the thing that worries me,” Katlin said as she sat next to Remi. “The corners are quiet as church on Sunday. That means either a professional hit or whoever this is brought in outside muscle. As for Vinny, you’ve known him longer than any of us. How reasonable do you think he’s willing to be?”
“Reasonable isn’t in Vinny’s vocabulary. He’s hyperactive and has poor decision-making skills, which is why I put him with Jasper. I thought the two would balance each other out. Where did this happen?” If it was anywhere near Jasper’s Aunt Maude, Vinny wasn’t the only one who was going to lose his shit.
“You know that club he opened in the east?” Katlin asked, and Cain and Remi nodded. “They were hopping last night, and someone did a drive-by and took out two of his men standing outside doing business.” Katlin put her hand up before Cain could say anything. “I know this sounds like a few other incidents around town, but they didn’t just spray the outside with bullets. They aimed and took out the two guys tied to Jasper. It was a calculated surgical hit.”
“It shouldn’t be hard to narrow down,” Remi said.
“That depends,” Cain said, trying to figure out the angle. “What we need is to talk to my favorite neighbor, but I’m not missing that plane.”
“How do you want me to handle that?” Katlin asked.
“He’s always so happy to hear from me, so let’s give him a call. Get Fin in here,” she said, prompting Katlin to go.
“What are you thinking?” Remi asked.
“I just want a phone conversation, but I don’t want to rile up the guys outside. With Fin’s help, we can leave them in the dark.”
Cain briefed her, and then Fin set up some equipment and made the call. Once Hector got on the phone, Finley gave him some directions and they waited.
“Cain, good morning,” Hector said, calling on the line Fin had specified.
