“I was with someone who eventually only saw me as a vehicle to cement her legacy through children. I became invisible in that relationship once I had kids, and you seemed to fall in love with my kids before—”
“I love your kids, baby, and I’ll be honored to raise them with you, but what sold me on a future with you, is you. You’re the woman I want, and invisibility is never going to be something you have to fear.” She kissed Abigail in a way that she hoped conveyed how she felt. “My problem is focusing on anything but you sometimes. I’m sure your parents must think I’m a horndog who can’t get enough of their little girl.”
“I had to go through hell to find you, lover, but I’m so glad I did,” Abigail said, kissing her again. “Thank you for loving my kids, but for loving me too.”
“You know,” Fin said, leaving the bed and heading to the closet and the drawer at the bottom of the built-in chest, “I was planning a romantic dinner in the perfect setting, but I don’t want another second to pass with you doubting how much I love you.”
She got down on her knees on Abigail’s side of the bed and took her hand. “Everything I do in my life, I want to do with you. No matter what comes, it’ll be okay because I have you. Abigail, you have all of me—I hope you know that. What I want now is for you to spend the rest of your life with me and be my wife.” She opened the box with the ring Emma had helped her pick out. “Will you marry me?”
“Yes,” Abigail said, the word sounding muffled because her hands were pressed to her cheeks. “Oh my God, yes.”
“I owe you that romantic dinner and perfect setting, but I couldn’t wait anymore.”
“This is perfect, and it saves you from my father’s lecture about your horndog ways,” Abigail said as she put the ring on her finger.
Fin felt like her heart could burst and every cheesy romantic movie ever made suddenly made perfect sense. “I talked to him last week, and we did in fact talk about that. Bob isn’t a big guy, but he does get his point across with plenty of menace.”
“He didn’t.” Abigail laughed as she pulled her back on the bed.
“I’m not telling on him, but convincing him to give me his blessing wasn’t a cakewalk,” she said, lying on Abigail but holding her weight off her. “He and your mom love you, and they’re both happy for us. What I can tell you is that I promised him I’d take care of you and the brood.”
“That’s a given.” Abigail put her thigh between her legs.
