A put-down like that didn’t sound any better when the asshole delivering it had a great smile and a beautiful face. “Our first supervisor shot Casey on the order of another mob boss the first few months I was here. That was followed by another one of our team members going to work for the Luis family. That special guy was responsible for killing my parents. He figured the most expeditious way of getting rid of Casey was to become what we spend our days trying to bring down. Never mind that he was part of our team from the moment I started working on it.”
“Hey, I didn’t mean anything by it,” Dylan said, putting her hands up.
“Please, of course you did. If you had the guts to say it, then have the guts to own up to it, Special Agent Gardner. Things here are way more complicated than anything you’ve dealt with before. What I haven’t read about is your team bringing down anyone up the cartel chain. Investigating and bringing down low-level guys isn’t rocket science.”
“Hey, I said I didn’t mean anything by it.”
“Your delivery needs work, then, and I’m sure an attitude like yours will get you promoted, but it’ll get you nowhere fast down here, especially with Casey. She’ll take that superior attitude of yours as a challenge, and you’ll pray for the days of the stupid drug folks you’re used to dealing with.” She got up and headed for the bathroom, giving Dylan a look that dared her to follow.
She headed to the restroom at the back of the restaurant and leaned against the closed door when she got inside. The sudden bouts of anger were something she had to work on in general, but sanctimonious bitches wreaked havoc on her rationality. This had the makings of another Anthony Curtis, and she wasn’t going through that again.
“That was a short honeymoon period,” a soft voice said from the other side of the bathroom. “Though, I’ve learned through the years that the best people don’t often go into law enforcement. In the movies it’s always the noble at heart that pursue the bad guys, but that’s far from the truth.”
“Mrs. Casey, you might be a tad skewed in your thinking,” she said to Emma as she lifted her head and faced her. “Were you waiting for me?”
“What a conceited thing to say. Sorry to disappoint, but my bladder has a mind of its own,” Emma said as she washed her hands. “You don’t look like you’re taking a true restroom break. Anything the matter? Feel free to tell me.” Emma winked.
“I didn’t realize you were moonlighting as a shrink.”
