“He learned his lesson and got his leash shortened, but I do have news. There’s an ambulance service that has ties to one of my brothers—one had someone charter a bus for an out-of-town client who was willing to pay for a long haul. The patient was a victim of a gunshot and couldn’t fly.”

“Do they have a destination?” If she was truly blessed, it would be as easy as following an ambulance and killing the patient.

“That’s the thing. They were about fifty miles out of the city heading due south when two troopers called in three bodies. The whole crew of EMTs is dead.” Angelo sounded pissed. “When we find these people, I’m asking you to be my stand-in when it comes to getting a piece of these assholes. Someone has to pay for the lives of three innocents.”

“I give you my word on that, and I promise to send you some heads by special courier.” She finished her call and turned to find Emma standing by the door, her robe hanging open. “I know we promised not to bother anyone before eleven, but we need to talk to Abigail.”

“What, now? We just woke up.”

She told her what Angelo had said, and Emma made the call. They had enough time to get dressed before Finley knocked on their door. “Sorry to get you up early, but I need to know every address Fredrick was linked to in Miami. Try to remember every house you visited or read about while you were down there.” If the ambulance was headed south, Miami had to be the destination, and she was willing to commit men to find Nicola.

“Cecil must’ve been telling the truth if they needed an ambulance to travel. Why kill the EMTs so quickly, though?” Finley asked.

“Keeping Nicola safe right now means limiting the number of people who know where she is. Nina either picked up someone who can monitor her as they go or is willing to chance that Nicola will survive.” She took the list from Abigail and squeezed her hand to take that frozen expression off her face. “I’d be willing to bet that after they dumped those guys, they dumped the transponder that tracks where the ambulance is right along with them.”

“This is a nightmare that never ends.” Abigail sounded miserable, and no one could blame her. “The thing I’m most afraid of is the kids finding out she’s still alive and trying her best to kill me.”

“Kids are more intuitive and smarter than we give them credit for,” Emma said. “They’re also forgiving. I’m living proof of that. In your case, though, I think if they do find out, it’ll be the excuse they haven’t perhaps given themselves to let the past go.” Emma hugged Abigail, and Cain motioned for Finley to follow her to the bedroom.
