“You can’t follow a car home? I’m beginning to doubt you’re helping me.” She stopped when the waitstaff delivered their meals. There was another headache starting, but she hoped eating something would stop it from becoming debilitating. “How hard can it be to tail children?”
“We see them come in the morning but never see them leave. It’s not a matter of following them—it’s finding out how they’re getting out of there. I can’t be sure, but it’s like Abigail figured out you’re still alive.” Nina spoke to her as if she didn’t care what happened. “Did you contact her?”
“I’m not an idiot, and there’s no way Abigail figured that out. She’s not going to know I’m alive until I’m ready to kill her. Once we get back, I’ll show you how it’s done.” She cut into her steak and smiled when Nina glared. Getting under someone’s skin was entertaining, and Nina was never this easy to rattle. “What else have you heard?”
“I talked to our contact at NYPD and asked about Finley Abbott. She left the force after the attempts on Abigail’s life. Where she is now wasn’t something they could answer.” Nina put her cutlery down and picked up her wine. “We know she’s in New Orleans, so the only answer is that she followed Abigail back. The children have taken her name, which means she followed Abigail for more reasons than just protecting her.”
“That’s the only answer? There’s more to it than that, and you need to find out what it is. Why in the hell would a cop leave her job for Abigail?” Her appetite disappeared at the thought of Abigail with someone else. The little bitch knew what was expected of her, and hopping into bed with someone else wasn’t acceptable. The fact that she’d turned her children away from their true heritage was her real sin, though.
“Abigail and the world thought you were dead,” Nina pointed out as if it should’ve been obvious.
“You just finished telling me she figured out I was alive.” She waved Nina off from saying anything else. “Finish and let’s get out of here.” They ate the rest of their meal in silence, and she sat thinking as Nina finished paying. After she took care of her family, she was thinking of starting over in Florida. New York would always be the center of their business, but there was no reason not to take some time and let the kids get used to being with her again.
