“Not yet, but we’ll get to that in a bit. Our job today is to make this woman as comfortable as we can, so she’ll hand over the rest of what she’s holding. The only thing we can’t do is try to intimidate her. I think she’s had a lifetime of that.”

“Before we go, there’s something you should know.” Finley walked them back inside and upstairs to the office, and whatever it was, it required Emma and Abigail to come along.

“Last night, Levi called,” Emma said. “There was a break-in at the school while we were here.”

“And this is our problem how?” Cain asked. Levi had been a nervous little Nellie from the time they were in grade school, and manhood had done nothing to quash that. “We wrote the damn check for the security system.”

“I know, and I wanted to call you, but I didn’t think it was a good idea. You were supposed to be here, remember?” Emma rested her hip against the desk and poked her with her toe. “Burner phone or no, I didn’t want to take a chance, and I didn’t want to distract you.”

“I can’t imagine what he thought you could do about it.”

“Baby, believe me, I thought the same thing until he sent the video footage from the hallway and office. And it was good he did.” She explained what else Levi had said.

She stared at the screen once Finley had cued the video up, and she watched Nicola’s every move. The woman, who was pissed enough to destroy her child’s artwork, had changed from the time she’d known her, and it hadn’t been for the better. Here was someone who was somewhat broken, judging by the way she limped and moved slowly. Whatever had happened to her, she’d become a bit unhinged, if her actions were any indication. Nicola had lost everything, and the only thing she had left to fill the hole was her children and killing Abigail.

“Last night, the woman who stabbed me told us that she didn’t know where Nicola was.” She started the video again, needing to study her opponent.

“How persuasive were you?” Finley sounded like she didn’t think she’d done enough. “I know you and what you’re like when you need to know something. This is my family, Cain.”

“You don’t think I know that?” She pressed her hand flat on the desk but tried her best to remain calm. “It’s the entire family, not just yours.”

“Cain, please,” Abigail said but stopped when Cain put her hand up.
