“Let me see what I can do, and I’ll let you know how it goes. The chief over there owes me a few favors, which means you’ll owe me a few if I come through for you. You think Casey had something to do with this?” Fritz asked, sounding like he couldn’t believe it, but it had to be considered. “She was like a caged animal, from what Sept told me, the day her kid went missing. Sebastian and I had to go over there and kiss the ring.” Fritz referred to Sebastian Savoie, the Chief of Detectives. He was Sept Savoie’s father and had another five boys on the force.
“I doubt it. Sept will tell you that Casey is way too smart for that, and she’d know that damn bridge is wired for action.”
“Give me ten minutes and I’ll call you back.”
“Thanks,” she said, ending the call. “Did the coroner turn over Newsome’s phone?” she asked her agent.
“He said there wasn’t one.”
“Ma’am,” her assistant said over the intercom. “Chief Jernigan is on the line for you.”
“That was fast,” she said before picking up. “Fritz, hello.”
“Those guys can’t wait to hand this off to you, so you have your case. They’ll send over all the paperwork as soon as it’s done. Just remember your promise to keep me updated. I’d like to be able to put this behind us and report that the NOPD had nothing to do with it.”
“Thanks, Fritz. I’ll call when I have something.” She handed all the pictures back and motioned for the agent to follow her. “Let’s start with the coroner. There’s no way Newsome died with no cellphone, and I’d like to know why someone forced him off that road. The first thing that tells us is someone knew where he was the whole time and moved in before he said something he shouldn’t have.”
“You’re coming with us, ma’am?”
“There’s something about this, and I’d like to know what it is. Newsome wasn’t a good cop, and he had sensitive enough information that someone killed him to keep him quiet. That’s especially true if it was something he thought would exonerate him.” That last conversation with Newsome kept replaying in her head. Whatever Newsome believed he had just might tie back to Casey. Could this finally be what they’d need to put Cain in their done file?
“Do you think we should talk to Carol Verde?” the agent asked.
