She watched Remi get out of the passenger side with a gun in each hand, and without a sound the two people in the yard went down. “Does this place have a basement?” she asked Linda.

“Yes.” Linda looked like she might be starting to panic, and Cain wanted to avoid that.

“Does it have a way to the outside?”

“No.” Tim answered this time, and he put his arm around his sister.

“Good. Get down there, and wait for me to come back. Even if I’m gone for a bit, don’t come up.” She looked at all three of them until they all nodded. “Do you have a gun?”

“They’re in the bags,” Joshua said.

“Can you lend me one?” He reached in his pack and handed her a Glock that appeared well taken care of. “Take the other ones along with those bags down with you. If someone else makes it in here, I want them to think you’re gone.”

“Please come back,” Tim said.

“I will, and you’ll all be fine.” She went out the back after they disappeared down a dark stairwell. It was amazing how dark it was, considering they were in the middle of town.

She stood outside the door and let her eyes adjust as she called Remi back. “Do you see anyone else?”

“Simon took care of the people in the car, so we should be good,” Remi said. It sounded like she was walking.

“We need to get the two in the yard into the house next door. That’ll buy us some time before we get the hell out of here.” She stepped around the corner and inhaled sharply when a knife went through her right bicep. Her other hand came up in reflex as the woman dressed in black went for another strike. The pain was intense, but she didn’t let go of the woman’s hand as she put all her weight behind her efforts, and this time the knife was aimed at her chest.

Remi came up behind them and smashed the butt of her gun into the asshole’s head, and she dropped like a rock, but not before the woman managed to pierce a spot above her right breast. “You okay?” Remi asked.

She lifted the hand of her injured arm and pressed it to her chest, trying to keep from bleeding on the ground. It wouldn’t be good to leave any trace of herself here if she could help it. “Drag all these fuckers inside. Including the two in the car.”

“We need to get that bleeding under control first,” Remi said, opening the back door for her.
