“I think it’s you who doesn’t understand. Nicola’s dead, and you’re full of shit. What do you really want?” Linda turned from wary to angry in a second.
“Let me show you something.” Cain took her phone out and found the video from the warehouse that had been destroyed with a bomb blast. “It’s date stamped so you can see it was shot well after Nicola’s accident.”
Linda watched it and replayed it after it was done. “This can’t be right.”
“You never see her face, but the one person in the world who knew her best aside from her family assured me the person walking around my place is Nicola Antakov. The name Eaton is as fake as whatever you’re using now.” She took her phone back and motioned for Linda and her brothers to sit. They all took the worn couch, and she sat across from them. “Abigail has had to run for her life, and when her in-laws were killed, she figured she was free of all this, until our security system picked this up.”
“Where the hell has she been?” Linda asked, staring at her as if she’d told her that Satan was real, and he was on his way over for drinks. “My uncle never said anything.”
“I can’t answer that because I don’t know. My best guess is she was recovering from the accident since that part was real. Her death, though, was staged to protect her from the investigation that was getting too close.” She checked her watch and could guess the freak-out level outside if she took much longer. “Right before you left New York, Abigail was in the city with her three children.”
“Uncle David talked about it a few times.” Linda averted her attention to her brothers, and their expressions were unreadable. “He mentioned that Abigail was planning to move to the city.”
“With everything you were planning, you might have missed what happened next.” She stopped and gazed at the boys as well. “You might want to hear this alone.”
“We know what our family was, Ms. Casey,” the older boy said. “Linda promised us we don’t have to be a part of that.”
The soft maturity in his voice reminded her of Hayden. “Listen to her. While Abigail was in the city, someone tried to kill her twice. She was shot the second time, and in the first attempt a bus full of women were killed so none of them could testify against your uncle.” The way Linda’s eyes widened made her stop.
“What women?” Linda said after a long, awkward moment.
“The ones from the quarry. One of them got a message out, and David made them all pay once he found out.” She looked at her phone again and put her finger up as she sent Remi a quick text.
