“Someone paid to be told when someone would be in the pub to set up the hit. They didn’t care who as long as they worked for me. I need one more piece of that puzzle, and that’ll lead us to the bank. Sounds like someone poured a little cash among some little minds, and it did wonders.” She pointed to the kitchen where Muriel’s housekeeper said dinner was waiting.
“So you don’t think it’s Nicola?” Mano asked.
“I could be reading her wrong, but this doesn’t strike me as something she’d be behind. If I’m right, she’s waiting for us to be out in the open and weak before she makes her move.” All the Chinese she ordered was in the oven, and Lou went to get plates. “We need to find her before that happens because none of us wants to spend months looking over our shoulders. But the request for information out there, the hit on the pub…someone else is after us. Not just her.”
“I might have some news on that front,” Mano said as he handed her a file. “Finley went through Nicola’s information and found Sacha Oblonsky. The FBI doesn’t know if Oblonsky is Nicola’s cousin, but he’s made quite a few moves to take over the family. Seems a likely prospect.”
“I wonder how hard Mr. Oblonsky is to get in touch with, and can we do it quietly?” she asked.
“I don’t know about quietly. He’s become the focus of the feds now that the Eaton family is dead. They finally connected that the Eaton name was just a front for the Antakov family. After the shooting in New Orleans, our friends in gray knew exactly what they were about.” Mano opened the file and showed her the guy’s picture.
Abigail was right—he was a scary-looking dude. “The bastards didn’t even send us a thank-you note for opening that pit that was the Hell Fire Club,” she joked as they sat to eat. “Has Oblonsky taken over? I don’t want to waste time on him if not.”
“The family seems torn, but he’s got the upper hand by claiming to be the next in line to David Eaton. He’ll have some rebuilding to do if he does land on top. The FBI and local authorities have shut down every business they had, according to the information Linda Bender gave them,” Mano said.
